I am waffling tonight.......

Pre dinner......

Happy Birthday Johnny!!!!

During Dinner....

I love some sax.

Must. Resist. Comment.   :-)

Seriously, this was filmed probably in the late Fifties/early Sixties after Getz moved to Europe. The two tenor styles couldn't be more dramatic - Getz with his warm, lyrical Lester-Young sound and Trane blowing great gobs of notes out of his horn with the frantic energy that eventually killed him. I had the sense that Getz felt a little intimidated, but that's just a guess in looking at body language.

The STAR of this short clip is Oscar Peterson, however. God, how I love his playing. So relaxed and effortless, but he swings his ass off.

The era of the Fifties and Sixties in bop, swing, and straight-ahead jazz is incomparable.

My Dad was a BIG jazz fan.  BIG.  That passion was fueled when my brother played tenor sax.  I cannot count the times we saw Airmen of Note.  And another Army band, but I can't remember which one.  His HS buddy had played in it, so there was an allegiance to it as well.

We were not allowed to talk while listening to jazz.  Dad had a reel to reel, and if we didn't pay attention to the changes, we were told to hush up, and it got rewound until we heard it in it's entirety.  Many a dinner was served cold, due to our inability to pay attention. And now, my brother is the exact same with his kiddos  :uhsure:

There's a lot that goes on in even a standard jazz chart. If you wanna go nuts, just look at Jaco Pastorius' playing of "Donna Lee", a Charlie Parker chart that goes by about 220 beats per minute (that's blindingly fast). Jaco was a bass player.......

Not to suggest that music is all about cramming as many notes into a space as possible, here's a look at Count Basie's spare, but oh-so-effective style:

Personally, I favor swing in virtually all styles from medium/jump to bop, but there's nothing more gutsy than slow, dirty, hip-grinding blues.

It's one of those nights...

I know the pieces fit
'Cause I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smouldering
Fundamental differing
Pure intention juxtaposed
Will set two lovers' souls in motion
Disintegrating as it goes
Testing our communication
The light that feuled our fire then
Has a burned a hole between us so
We cannot see to reach an end
Crippling our communication

I know the pieces fit
'Cause I watched them tumble down
No fault, none to blame
It doesn't mean I don't desire to
Point the finger, blame the other
Watch the temple topple over
To bring the pieces back together
Rediscover communication

The poetry
That comes from the squaring off between
And the circling is worth it
Finding beauty in the dissonance

There was a time that the pieces fit
But I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smouldering
Strangled by our coveting
I've done the math enough to know
The dangers of our second guessing
Doomed to crumble unless we grow
And strengthen our communication

Cold silence has
A tendency to
Atrophy any
Sense of compassion
Between supposed brothers
Between supposed lovers

I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit

Anybody asks me why I left LA, and they like Tool, I tell them to listen to this:

Some say the end is near.
Some say we'll see armageddon soon.
I certainly hope we will.
I sure could use a vacation from this

Bullshit three ring circus sideshow of
Freaks

Here in this hopeless ****ing hole we call LA
The only way to fix it is to flush it all away.
Any ****ing time. Any ****ing day.
Learn to swim, I'll see you down in Arizona bay.

Fret for your figure and
Fret for your latte and
Fret for your hairpiece and
Fret for your lawsuit and
Fret for your prozac and
Fret for your pilot and
Fret for your contract and
Fret for your car.

It's a
Bullshit three ring circus sideshow of
Freaks

Here in this hopeless ****ing hole we call LA
The only way to fix it is to flush it all away.
Any ****ing time. Any ****ing day.
Learn to swim, I'll see you down in Arizona bay.

Some say a comet will fall from the sky.
Followed by meteor showers and tidal waves.
Followed by faultlines that cannot sit still.
Followed by millions of dumbfounded dipshits.

Some say the end is near.
Some say we'll see armageddon soon.
I certainly hope we will cuz
I sure could use a vacation from this

Silly shit, stupid shit...

One great big festering neon distraction,
I've a suggestion to keep you all occupied.

Learn to swim.

Mom's gonna fix it all soon.
Mom's comin' round to put it back the way it ought to be.

Learn to swim.

**** L Ron Hubbard and
**** all his clones.
**** all those gun-toting
Hip gangster wannabes.

Learn to swim.

**** retro anything.
**** your tattoos.
**** all you junkies and
**** your short memory.

Learn to swim.

**** smiley glad-hands
With hidden agendas.
**** these dysfunctional,
Insecure actresses.

Learn to swim.

Cuz I'm praying for rain
And I'm praying for tidal waves
I wanna see the ground give way.
I wanna watch it all go down.
Mom please flush it all away.
I wanna watch it go right in and down.
I wanna watch it go right in.
Watch you flush it all away.

Time to bring it down again.
Don't just call me pessimist.
Try and read between the lines.

I can't imagine why you wouldn't
Welcome any change, my friend.

I wanna see it all come down.
suck it down.
flush it down.
