How can I use up yogurt?

I recently bought a quart of local, Amish-made whole-milk yogurt. This seemed like a good idea at the time, but the yogurt is a bit gamey, in that you can pretty much taste what the cows were eating, and what they were eating was in the onion family. While I'm all for naturally pastured cows, I'm not going to eat this yogurt for breakfast. I've used up a cup of it to make biscuits and am looking for something else to make with it that will disguise the taste.

1. You could try it as a marinade for some meat. Lamb or beef for kabobs?

4. 50% yogurt + 50% milk makes a buttermilk substitiute

Does that help?

Not as much as throwing out the whole mess would help.

7. That's what I did for biscuits

But we can only eat so many baked goods.

5. You could use it in stroganoff or swedish meatballs

or stir into curry or chili.

Gamey Amish yogurt into chili.  Skul, will you pass the mushrooms to go in that chili, too?

9. When the cows are dining on ramp and/or mustard, the milk gets very, very weird

What you might do with the yogurt is use it up in savory recipes like yogurt chicken. Doctoring it up with plenty of garlic and spice and serving it with meat can cover up the off flavor from what the cow was eating.

I sympathize, I grew to loathe milk when I was a kid since I turned lactose intolerant at about 5 years old. When it was ramp season in the south, it became even worse and no amount of chocolate powder could disguise the funk. On good days, my mother would leave the kitchen long enough to get it down the sink. On bad days, I had horrible diarrhea in school.

There is a good chance the warped primitive shit her pants at school at least once.

13. Something about the word "gamey" made me just want to throw it out.

15. Add it to soups and gravies...

Pumpkin soup is ridiculously easy to make from scratch, and "gamey" yogurt should fit right in.

17. You can always use it in mashed potatoes. I put sour cream or yogurt in mashers, add a bit of heavy

cream and a little butter. Everyone loves them. Of course I always add a purple top turnip to the potatoes because of the lovely flavor, but I don't tell anyone because they wouldn't eat them. They just think I have a great way of making mashed potatoes.

WTF?  First beans in brownies and now sour cream/yogurt/turnips in mashed taters?  :puke:

As an aside... I wonder if the dummie knows what the slang term masher means?

Yep, every once in awhile our milk cow would get into wild onions or bitter weeds and we just threw the milk out.

DUmmies just trying to be so "back to nature" and all..... :-).....sometimes nature stinks.

Not enough, apparently.  :lmao:

Maybe the primitive could add some onion bits, freeze it and make delicious 'onion froyo' to share with it's friends and family. I hear it goes great on a warm 'fresh from the oven' black bean brownie..

Mmmm. Breakfast.

A cup of fruit pie filling (cherry or strawberry) would fix that right up, but that would be the obvious answer.  Can't have any of that.

You can strain yogurt in cheesecloth or probably a coffee filter.  What you have left is basically cheese.

One could throw that yogurt in the compost pile and it would have more culture than all the dump combined.

I'd rather buy an evil capitalist brand of yogurt like Yoplait, so I don't have to worry about some home made yogurt and worry about the screaming squirts.

So some DUmmie buys a batch of "natural, organic, non-corporate" yogurt, and is suprised it doesn't taste like the "natural, organic, store bought" yogurt sold at Target and the Green Grocer.

How can I use up yogurt?

I recently bought a quart of local, Amish-made whole-milk yogurt.

And the Amish laughed and laughed at the gullible DUmmy, as she drove away with that quart of rancid yogurt.

The marinade suggestion was fine for Kabobs, but I could not believe my eyes when the DUmmie said to add it to Chili.  Come on!  Mole?

Our Amish around here never sell yogurt, or anything like that.  They're not required to have commercial kitchens, but they stick to baked goods and fresh vegetables/fruit.  They don't have  electric for refrigeration.  This whole story smells fishy.

Those that don't use an icebox or have electric refrigeration will typically have a gas powered freezer or refrigerator.

The Amish just west of us sell honey as well as the baked goods.  I've seen them at the rest stops west of Albany on I-90, but only in the mornings.
