Well 3 Chemo treatments down, 5 more to go.
« on: November 05, 2012, 04:16:57 PM »
This sucks, do I need to say more? We cut her hair and she goes in the day after for a shot for the nausea, but she's as limp as a wash rag. No energy and no appetite. I made her some shepherd's pie and she managed to eat the hell outa that, but not much else.

Her scalp is tender as hell along with her mouth. Don't understand that last part. Never heard of that before. One of the reasons she's not eatin' very well.

We're pluggin' along though and with the good Lord's help, we'll get thru it.

Have I thanked y'all for your support lately? If I haven't, it's only because I've had a few things on my mind, doncha know!

When I was taking methotrexate (a chemo drug but I was taking a lot less than someone who has cancer) I got canker sores (very painful ones) in my mouth. It is common with this type of treatment.

Edited to add: Another thing, my scalp was sore when I was taking methotrexate and arava. Both drugs I lost hair but I lost the most with arava. For a girl it felt like what it feels like to wear your hair in a ponytail (high on your head) all day and what it feels like when you take it down. I think the painful scalp has something to do with hairloss.

I was one of the lucky ones. Radiation treatments daily Monday - Friday for six weeks and about 15 rounds of chemo (never counted them but there were a butt load, even the Dr's. said it was a very aggressive regimen ) and only got nauseous a couple times. Only used the anti nausea pills a time or two.

I also beat the odds in not only did I survive, the cancer not in remission but gone altogether.

I'm not taking anything for granted, I do look both ways before crossing a street.

Yeah, pretty sure. Glad we cut it before it got any worse. She's pretty sexy with that head scarf though, heh, heh! It's one of those that has tailes about a foot long in the back.

As far as they can tell, they got it all. Took out about 8 lymph nodes from under her armpits, (I had no idea ya had any there), but the prognosis looks good. Besides, she's a pretty tough broad. She's lived with me for 39 years, so she has to be!

That's good to hear.  Praying the chemo does it's thing and that she gets some relief from the side effects.

I was on Methadone & Dilaudid for about 9 months. That probably helped with the nausea and pain.  I don't even like taking aspirin and was ingesting heroin & morphine pills  :panic:

The prick I used to go to for my back had me on methadone! Took it for about 5 ****in' years and quit cold turkey. Hardest thing I've ever done in my life! Needless to say I don't see that asshole any more! Codiene doesn't kill the pain as well, but that methadone was a real pain in the ass! Especially if ya run out!

No worries! We beat every other obstacle that's been put in our way, so I doubt this will be any different. Maybe a little more stressful, but just an obstacle none the less.

Prayers up here Allo.  I know people that went through chemo and had the same problem with their mouth.  Biotene Mouthwash seems to help.  You can get it in the drug store.
R.I.P. LC and Crockspot.  Miss you guys.

Also liquid Benadryl and maalox (equal parts), swish it in our mouth for a minute or so and spit it out. It's gaggy but it really does help.

Modern American medicine is amazing, when one considers that within my lifetime a cancer diagnosis was almost a guaranteed death sentence.  Today the odds are in the patient's favor!

So, best wishes, AllosaursRus!  As Americans you are undoubtedly optimists, so think and hope for the best!

The only medical advice I can give comes from a friend who is an M.D. in Cincinnati: he recommends Elderberry in some form against viral and bacterial infections, either as a preventative or as a treatment.

Elderberry Wine comes to mind!   O-)

I was told that. Also Cranberry juice. Also to eat lots of cultured yogurt.
