"Toots"
« on: October 30, 2012, 08:11:11 PM »
Well, we go in tomorrow for our next chemo treatment. The nose bleeds are a pain in the ass! She's already losin' her hair, which I'm sure all you ladies know is not a good thing. I didn't think it would start happenin' so quick. If I can keep her depression on an even keel, we'll get thru it. It's not easy. Losin' her hair didn't help!

Son of a Bitch! I wouldn't even wish this on a DUmpster diver, and there are quite a few that deserve it!!

That sucks.  I hope this works out for her.

My sister went through radiation therapy (I assume it's different from chemo).  She still has side effects three months later.

Yeah, chemo id radiation x 10! She's had 2 sisters have to have the radiation and this is much worse. The day after chemo, she has to go in and get some kind of shot for the nausea. Not sure what it is, but if she doesn't get it, she can't eat and keep anything down.

Allo, if she's up for it, have her wear a scarf or turban to bed. This way, it's less depressing to see so much of her hair on the pillow.

My wife is a nurse; she used to work oncology. I have heard her give that advice many times.

Thanx Bubba! I'll pass it along to her, although she's really not up for suggestions at the moment. Maybe I can convince her it will make less of a mess and won't seem as bad if it's all in one place.

Shit, I don't know what to do! I've never seen her this depressed. Not even when her father died.

This ****in' sucks!

I'm pretty sure if we get thru this she will recover 100% but it's damn difficult to convince her of that!

My heart hurts for the both of you.  I wish I could offer you fix it advice.  I have known several women that had to undertake chemo.  The ones that shaved their head, so as not to endure the constant falling out seemed to adapt better.  That is just what I know from personal experience.  Everyone is different.  Wigs can be fun.

Yeah, she cut it real short so it wouldn't be too much of a shock, but still, women and bald should never be used in the same sentence. She get's a free wig, but she still has to look in the mirror and I think that's what's botherin' her the most.

I feel for Toots. :( I have been on methotrexate (a chemo drug) and Arava (which is a DMARD) both cause hair loss. I was loosing handfuls taking Arava and it started within the first month.  Both of those medications also made me sick but the last medication I have been on (Imuran) made me flu sick. 102 fever, body ached so bad and chills.

The amount of chemo she is taking is so much more than what I was taking, I'm pretty sure she is going to start feeling really terrible the longer she is on it. Losing your hair, especially for a woman, is really a frightening thing. You don't realize just how scary it is until it happens to you.

That's the worst part, the sickly feeling. "Toots" has never been sick. Oh sure, the occasional cold or a slight tinge of the flu, but nothin' like this! I can't even imagine how bad it would be if she didn't get that anti-nausea shot! She has to go in the following day after every chemo treatment to get it.

Wish I could do it for her, damn it!

My love and prayers are going out to you both...I have a friend, who is going thru stage 4 lymphoma. She found out a month ago.. Well she has started treatments, but what is speciial, is that Beth Isreal Hospital has a program called Caring Bridge. The patient gets an account(if you will)  and there she can keep friends and family updated on what is going on with her. She can upload pics of her with family and friends. People can sign a guestbook, anytime and as many times as they want. They can upload pics as well. Write a poem, or a funny story they both share with Toots.. It is just an idea...

Friends who have had chemo went ahead and had their head shaved. It was easier than seeing it fall out and at least with shaving the head, what little there is that might come in doesn't show up on the pillow.

If Toots likes milk shakes, she if she can keep those down. The milk kind of coats the insides. You can put an egg in them and it really doesn't noticably affect the taste. I lived on milkshakes for 9 weeks when I had my lower face wired together. When she doesn't feel like eating, perhaps she can drink a shake. It will get protein and calories into her, and not require any effort like cutting up food and chewing does.

I too, wish I could make it all go away for you guys. Since I can't, I will just keep you both in my prayers and send lots of hugs.  :grouphug:

Caring Bridge is good for family and friends, but it can also be depressing for Toots and you if you see other people's posts....

Allo, tell her that you love her no matter what.  That you married her for the person she is on the inside, which is Eternal, and not the human she is on the outside, which is not.

You two are in our prayers, my friend.  We're here for you.

Hang in there Allo. My mom had chemo years ago for breast cancer, my dad for multiple myeloma.

In my moms case she opted for the wig. It helped her get through it as she felt she looked "normal" during the treatment. Afterwards her hair came back with a vengeance. She did not mind that!

My dad was just..............not himself, after. The drugs they gave him were VERY powerful and caused nearly as many problems as the cancer.   :(

The woman that raised my wife, the woman she called momma, lost her hair to chemo. When it came back it was jet black and looked like a teenagers hair. It was still that way when she passed away, not a grey hair in her head.

Continuing the prayers for the two of you Allo.  This is surely the most difficult time, when it's over you can look back and know that after all of the junk, you are both still here and more grateful than ever that you had this chance. I sure hope that came out the way I meant it.

My sis had lung cancer and the hair loss was a shock (she was terribly vain) but SO grateful that chemo gave her more time. She was one that shaved her head and said "bring it!" Everyone handles this differently and as long as Toots has YOU, she can do this.  The nausea is horrible, the shake idea is great.  Put a little Hershey kiss on top! Bless you for being there for her and dang skippy we're here for you BOTH.

Praying for you both! When my Granny went through chemo, the hair loss was rough on her, but she and I went shopping for scarves, bandannas, etc. that she could wear. She also got a wig. My Grandad took a picture of her to the wig maker and they made her one that looked just like her hair. Like others have said, when her hair came back, it went from grey to jet black, like when she was a teen! To this day, she has less grey than I do! Best of luck to you both

Yeah, we shaved her head right after the chemo treatment today. Get this, she was afraid she was gonna clog the drain when she took a shower and didn't want me to have to fix it

I think this is the best way to go. She gets a free wig, but wants to wait because her scalp is so sensitive right now.

Well, we're 2 down and 6 more to go, so we're just gettin' started. The last 4 are heavy duty. As if it could get worse, I guess it will.

Totally sucks! We've been thru a lot in 40 years so I'm sure we'll take this in stride like we have everything else.

We sure appreciate the help we're gettin' here at the cave. Sure makes it considerably more tolerable!

Thanx y'all, you guys keep my sanity in check!
