Title: Traveshamockery and Christmas crap
Post by: BEG on November 04, 2012, 06:06:43 PM
Em I put your screen name at the top so you would read this.  I just ordered a bunch of Christmas stuff for making cards and other christmas stuff. If you would like to come over one day and make cards, tags for presents and other stuff let me know. I have a lot of ideas. I probably won't get the items I ordered for about a week.

I posted this so I have to come back and post pictures of what I make so I will actually do it.

Let me tell you guys, this card took me forever. First you have to stamp it, then you put the die on it, center it as best as you can then tape the die down with painters tape and run it through a die cutting machine.  Every single ornament I had to make, PITA.  I screwed up on my first card so I cut off the face of the card (the wood stamp and snowflake paper), distressed it then sewed it to the front of a new card. I think it turned out better than if I would have just stamped right on to the card front.

Familiar scrap booking. It would take me 4 hours to do a 2 page layout.  Argh. But I still love doing it. I know you so too my fellow perfectionist:)

I made another card. I lost a leaf to the poinsettia so I need to make another one. I thought it would look fine without it but the upper left corner looks a little naked.  Tomorrow I'm going to do clean and simple cards that I can mass produce so I can get them done.

For those of you who are interested this is what i did:

First I embossed red and green paper then used sand paper to take the color off the high points of the embossing (it's a special paper called core'dinations and has a color core that has a lighter shade of the same color on the inside).  The lighter color from the mbossing/sanding doesn't show up in the picture.

Here is the paper pad:

Then I cut out the poinsettia using the Tim Holtz Tattered Poinsettia die. I used some distress ink (by Tim Holtz) and put it around the edges.

This is the tool you use and the ink by Tim Holtz. The tool has Velcro on the bottom and you use foam rectangles that have Velcro on the top that can be replaced as they wear out or you change colors. I have enough of them that I don't have to switch the foam pads often.  The color of distress ink pad I used is called Vintage Photo.

Here is the stand I have that I store my blending tools on. I love the retro look of it.

I also sprayed a little mica mist (Lindy's Stamp Gang).  I used a couple of different colors. I love this stuff.  It doesn't show up in pictures too well. This is what one color looks like:

Then I embossed a thick piece of kraft color paper and used some distress ink on it. Then I used a corner cropper (its called a corner chomper by crop-a-dile) and rounded the corners (I have the 1/4" &1/2" tool, I want one that has 1/8" & 3/8" radius if anyone wants to buy me a christmas present) and then used this tool that you plug in and it distresses the edges.

Here is the corner chomper:

Here is the distressing tool, it's super cool:

Next I used some stickles and put it on the background paper and the poinsettia.  The color of the stickles is called Tea Dye

Next I used another embossing folder that has the saying, cut it out, used a smaller corner chopper and distressed with distressing ink and the edge distress thingy, then used the stickles.  I had a red premade card and matching envelopes so I used that and added some green polka dot paper on about 3/4ths of the card. It's by Papertray Ink (I love the site) and the paper pad is called distressed dots.

I cropped the corners, tied some twine around the kraft paper part and used a small round stamp I got at Hobby Lobby the other day on sale for a couple of dollars and put it over the knot of the twine.  It sounds really involved but didn't take me long to make.

And now for something random:

This girl who worked with my husband at his last job painted this picture. She knew he had a Chevy pickup project truck but I don't know if she knew I am from Nebraska (Cornhusker).  :-) It's really small, 4x6 I think. My camera on my phone didn't take a clear picture of it. It really is amazing when you see how small it is and what a good job she did. We are going to have it framed it in a weathered wood type of frame if we can find one.

Well, I made my dad a birthday card today. He will be 73 November 27th. I made the front then use grommets to attach it to the card front.  As soon as I put the last one in (upper right) I noticed they were not all in the same place. I'm pissed and the perfectionist in me is telling myself to redo the card. I could get the license, bingo piece (notice it is a 73) off. It wouldn't take too long to do the rest over.

The Nebraska license plate I made.  It's from a paper pad by Tim Holtz and this small rectangular piece of plastic. You use this stuff called glossy accents and after it dried i cut around the rectangle. Glossy Accents is like glue but dries to a glossy finish so you can use it for things like what I did or put it on top of something you want glossy.

What would you all do, redo it or say its good enough?

I'd leave it.  You can hardly notice that two of the grommets are about 3/16 of inch misaligned with the other two.

This card took me forever to "think up" but now that I have it down I could mass produce it easily.

First I cut the colored paper in strips. Then cut then each 1/2" different lengths. I have a beautiful birch tree stamp, it has 5 tree trunks (I think). I stamped it then cut one of the trunks out for the Christmas tree. Then I used a die to cut out the back ground. I aged the back ground and patterned paper strips that make the tree.

Next I stamped and embossed the word JOY in white embossing powder then cut it out with a die that also embosses. While it was still in the die I dirtied it up with the same ink I used above. Then I used a different die to cut out the snowflake and used really thick embossing powder on it. Last I put some "bling" in the lower corner because it needed something.

I tell you, it sure it hard thinking up ideas. I got the idea for the tree from a card I had seen a few days ago. I couldn't find it again and I couldn't remember what the rest of the card looked like. It's funny, you sit down to make one card you have an idea for and you end up with a totally different one.

I did not notice the grommets at first. I really think it's a neat looking card.

I am also very anal and like things to be perfect. It's easier to say "let it fly" then to actually do it.

If you can get yourself to do so, send it just like it is. Old license plates were never perfect! I know way too many adults & young people that do not send their parents cards, let alone take the time to make one by hand. I simply think that is simply awesome of you.  :cheersmate:

Great picture:

Card

I touched the stickles (sparkle stuff) under the "tis the season". I have to retouch. Only thing not made by me was the stockings. They were already made by Martha Stewart.  I even stamped the green dots on the green paper.  :-)

Because the card is corrugated cardboard I put a piece of white paper inside to write on.

I was thinking of using one of the cards above but making it smaller to mass produce. It's easy and fast. Except I only had three more stockings the same size as the ones above. I made a smaller card like the one below and put the stockings in the squares but I haven't put a saying on it yet so I haven't taken a picture of it yet. Now I either have to make something, stamp something or change the box sizes to fit more items.

I used the same paper as I used for the first card.  I cut ho ho with my silhouette cand embossed it

Not me. Some things - like sanity - are more important than price.

But hey, it's something you enjoy doing and when you have the mindset and the time, go for it. I certainly do not, and neither does Mrs E. So we "spend da money" and live another day.  :-)

Actually, I'm a wee bit jealous. Christmas gifts are always better when they're hand made. Reminds me of Tiny Tim.  :cheersmate:

Then looked at this card...

And decided I needed to change the greeting. It was crooked and kinda blah. I was luckily able to get the card off the card base. I used another card base because I screwed it up.

This one was fun for some reason.

Look close, can you see the shadow?  First I stamped with a metallic ink (platinum), its faint.  Then I stamped with versa mark (it's what you use when you want to emboss) then I embossed it with silver embossing powder. Next I dry embossed it with a snow flake embossing folder. Next I used red stickles to make red berries, then I put a few small gems on the "berries". Then I made the greeting and cut it out with a die (two actually one oval and another a scalloped oval.
