Swing sets removed at some W.Va. schools
   
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Elementary school playgrounds in one West Virginia county are losing their swing sets.

Swings are being removed from Cabell County schools in southern West Virginia in part because of lawsuits over injuries.

Cabell County schools safety manager Tim Stewart said on Wednesday that a lot of parents are accusing him of being un-American, but he says the cost of maintaining a safe surface is too expensive.

Stewart says a lawsuit in the past year involved a youngster who broke his arm jumping off a swing like Superman. It was settled for $20,000.

Other equipment such as monkey bars will remain. Stewart says the schools are able to maintain the proper protection underneath them.

I heard about this earlier on Hannity. I have a question. Anyone's parents here ever sue the school for your own stupidity while at school?

Hell, my boy decided to play I-Man and bit his tongue leapin' out of a swing when he was in the fifth grade! The school offered to put it on their insurance and I declined. I figured if my kid was dumb enough to pull that crap, it certainly wasn't the schools fault!

I told 'em if he tries that crap again, beat his ass, or call me, and I would be more than happy to oblige!

The thought of suing the school would never occur to me if my kids get hurt on the playground! Kids are kids, for cripes sake! They're bound to get bumps and bruises figuring out they aren't "I-Man"!

IIRC it was around 1986-7 when the nation's law schools would graduate the same amount of lawyers as were practicing at the time.  Could be BS but if not I blame LA Law.

I can remember playing dodge ball while lined up against the brick wall of the grade school. Jungle Gyms (that's racist, isn't it?) and swing sets were on concrete or asphalt to keep them from settling into the ground.

Plenty of us liberals who are as disgusted as y'all at ridiculous lawsuits.

Although you may rightfully claim more litigation attorneys are Dems/Liberals, I have yet to see evidence that most plaintifs in ridiculous suits lean one way or the other politically.

However , it is the Democrats that prevent any meaningful kind of tort reform from happening.  Even something as simple as loser pays would cut down on a lot of the BS that happens.
