poll: should I rat on Skins's island?
« on: October 10, 2009, 08:25:29 AM »
Yesterday (Friday), I noticed that primitives on Skins's island, especially in the "Breaking News" forum, are using excerpts from the Associated Press (AP).

This issue was addressed here a few months ago.

http://www.conservativecave.com/index.php/topic,31345.0.html

It was also addressed on freerepublic, which no longer allows any Associated Press links on its web-site.  Period.

That's the rule, and we don't like it, but being decent and civilized people, we follow the rule.

The primitives of course are another matter altogether; being Democrats and liberals, the primitives think they have to follow only rules that they want to follow.

I'm torn.  I think that Skins's island should be turned into the Associated Press, but on the other hand, there's the old school tie with my fellow alum Skins, and I have nothing but the warmest affection for a fellow alum.

It actually would be interesting to see if the Associated Press holds liberal forums to the same standard as conservative ones so I'm inclined to encourage you to be a little birdy in their ear.

Nothing irks a liberal more than having to follow the same rules as THE LITTLE PEOPLE.

When you ignore a rule is when you endorse a lower standard, something decent and civilized people cannot allow to happen.

Plus, it'll piss them off to no end.

I'm with the majority (OK the landslide) here. All you have to do is a nice friendly inquiry as to why is it that the right seems to have rules while the left can run roughshod all over their copyrighted wishes. How it does nothing for perceptions that the media is a liberal mouthpiece.  :innocent:

It should be done for one reason - so when we quote the primitives here, we do not accidentally quote an AP article that wasn't properly cited by the primitive.

Making them really angry is just a pleasant side-effect.

I doubt they will. I wonder what Kos and Huffies have been up to with AP articles?

I voted no.

There is a difference between "fair use" quotes of AP articles with links to the original story & publishing the entire article online as part of your own online news blog or newspaper. The latter is what AP does not like.

I say yes - because they'd do it to US in a heartbeat and turnabout is fair play.

Fair use is a tricky defense at best in this regard. One of the tests that dictates fair use of quoted copyrighted work is if profit is generated from it.

It could be argued that websites with second or third party advertisement  banners or links that may result in financial gain to the owners of that website are profiting off of unlicensed copyrighted work if it is included within that site.

Even though this doesn't apply to parody (Which is why Weird Al hasn't been successfully sued off the planet) It can be said that we are mocking the primitives, but not the news articles they may be citing in their posts.

Personally, I think the AP are being a bunch of weenies for choosing this angle to defend their turf - requiring paid licenses to reproduce anything of theirs on a website. Ultimately a partial article or headline will drive traffic to them when casual readers wish to finish the story.

I'm still watching the situation, the primitives sloppily disregarding the rules regarding the use of Associated Press material.

When I do something, if I do something, I'll of course advertise it here.

Ah, but Ptarmigan, one is faced with a grievous moral dilemma here.

franksolich's rule of life is "first, do no harm."

While it's true that my fellow alum Skins doesn't even know franksolich exists, franksolich feels compelled to adhere to that old school tie, that of not making things difficult for one's compatriots.

franksolich is a nice guy, one of the nicest guys one can ever hope to meet.

However, rules are rules, and rules are meant to be followed by everybody, not only decent and civilized people.

The matter has truly taxed this conscience the past few days.

But whatever I end up doing, of course I'll advertise it here.

Twice.  Remember that the primitives would hesitate only as long as it would take to stuff the remaining Cheetos into their maws (or set the bong down carefully, so as not to spill the water), before doing the same to us.

franksolich's rule of life is "first, do no harm."

It would do less harm to have the practice ended now before AP delivers skins a bill so large that it bankrupts the island.
