A company that sold gift certificates to businesses and individuals around the U.S. has shut down, leaving thousands to wonder if unredeemed certificates for restaurants and stores are now worthless.

CertifiChecks Inc., which operated in 47 states, says it is filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. It hasn't made clear whether it will honor the unredeemed gift certificates.

Due to an extremely difficult economic environment, CertifiChecks, Inc., has ceased operations, effective immediately.
CertifiChecks will no longer administer gift certificate programs.
CertifiChecks gift certificate sales have been halted.

CertifiChecks is in the process of filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Dayton, Ohio.

Do not deposit CertifiChecks gift certificates in the bank as they will be returned.

Merchants: Please remove all door and register decals.

So where did all the money go?  People paid for these gift certificates and there's probably millions of dollars in outstanding certificates still around.  Money just doesn't disappear.  It's in someone's pocket or bank account.

If you have CertifiChecks gift certificates which you would like to submit for potential reimbursement, please remit to the address listed below.

Sh'yeah, right!  Send it in and you'll never see it again, nor will you have any proof you ever had it in the first place.  It will vanish down the memory hole (and the paper shredder).

I smell a scam.
