I know we are a constitutional federal republic, but the term "the greatest threat to our democracy since..." is bandied about quite a bit in the press. I'm not here to argue semantics and minutiae.
We keep hearing so much about "threats to our democracy" as if the potential for the entire structure of the government suddenly being swept away is a bad thing.
Unless the people are free to choose their system of government - without coercion - it's not a democracy.
The very definition of "democracy" demands we ask the people, "Well, how do you think things ought to be managed?" and then accept the risk of whatever answers they may conjure.
A true threat to a true democracy can only come from within the government itself; when the people responsible for its administration, make it so unpalatable the citizenry demands their abolition and the institution of a new form of government.
