It's bad enough that Detroit Public Schools (DPS) graduates a pathetic 1 in 4 students, the worst in the nation. That obscene graduation rate is only that high because DPS commits 'social promotion' - the practice of passing students onto the next grade who are not ready, a practice that DPS emergency financial manager Robert Bobb has just ended (Detroit Public Schools Finally Ends "Social Promotion" - Passing Students That Can't Read Their Diplomas). That same Robert Bobb has been fighting with the teachers union and with the Detroit school board for academic control of the district. The school board is led by Otis Mathis, who wrote a mass email last August:
Do DPS control the Foundation or outside group? If an outside group control the foundation, then what is DPS Board row with selection of is director? Our we mixing DPS and None DPS row's, and who is the watch dog?
And here's the beginning of an email to supporters a few days ago that started with this:
If you saw Sunday's Free Press that shown Robert Bobb the emergency financial manager for Detroit Public Schools, move Mark Twain to Boynton which have three times the number seats then students and was one of the reason's he gave for closing school to many empty seats.
Apparently being a Detroit school board president and having to compose written communications is so easy even a caveman can do it. The above examples are emails in raw, unedited form as per the Detroit News. Laura Berman, a far left writer for the News has this:

Yet another classic example of reverse racism.
This stuff started with Jerome Cavanaugh in a minor way, then Coleman Young really blew the doors off the place with his "special" brand of nepotism and spoils. He set the gold standard and the rest of them have been trying to outdo each other since.

As if Detroit doesn't have enough problems these days, the president of the city's school board offered the shocking admission that he can't pen a coherent sentence.
Otis Mathis, who oversees the academic future of 90,000 public school students, told the Detroit News that he's a "horrible writer" after reports surfaced that he sent a Feb. 29 e-mail to the financial manager of Detroit Public Schools that was rife with spelling, punctuation and usage errors.
"If you saw Sunday's Free Press that shown Robert Bobb the emergency financial manager for Detroit Public Schools, move Mark Twain to Boynton which have three times the number seats then students and was one of the reason's he gave for closing school to many empty seats," the e-mail read, according to the paper.

He graduated from Southwestern High School in 1973 with what he says was a 1.8 grade-point average but was previously reported as a .98 average. After serving in the Navy, Wayne State placed him in a special program to help academically unqualified students move forward, on the G.I. Bill.
He stayed at Wayne for 15 years, as a student and a counselor, becoming a virtual "prisoner of Wayne," as he jokes, unable to graduate.
Mathis and another student unsuccessfully challenged the use of an English proficiency test as a requirement for graduation. In 1992, when the case went to trial, the lawsuit gained national attention. Mathis said then his failure to pass the test "made me feel stupid." The requirement was eventually dropped in 2007, and Mathis applied to get his degree the next year, after his election.

This in a system were barely 1 in 4 graduates, and those who do are woefully unprepared.

I can't watch the video but the comments (click "all") give a glue as to what is wrong with Detroit.....they are a riot....and people call me racist.... :rotf:

Some of the comments sound as if either Mr. Mathis wrote them or some of the Detroit school graduates wrote them.... :rotf:
I really shouldn't be laughing at the cancer that's eating America.

Actually I do not give a rats ass if you sound raciest or not. I believe it was the show on Wendsdays on the Mickey Mouse program that the kids sang that " You can be what you want to be, just come and follow me."
To me I could care less if this man was a bald headed Chinaman---what he is doing is wrong---get him out away from the kids.
So how is it raciest to relate what you see in person or on the news.?

Detroit is a cesspool.
