One of the two young Americans convicted of murdering an Italian cop in a drug deal gone bad has a history of attempting suicide — and his parents fear he won’t survive life in prison.

“We just want Finn to be able to survive this,” Finnegan Lee Elder’s mom, Leah Elder, told “Good Morning America” of her 21-year-old son getting Italy’s harshest possible sentence last Wednesday.

“He has a noted history of attempted suicide, and we’re really worried and really concerned,” she said in the interview aired Monday.

“He struggles with anxiety and depression, and his current situation is really perilous,” she said of her son, who was jailed in Rome alongside former Californian schoolmate Gabriel Natale-Hjorth, now 20.

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

Do his parents understand he received a life sentence?  What do they mean they just want him "to survive this"?

Digging down the rabbit hole...

Kids (18 and 19 at the time of the crime) felt they were ripped off by a drug dealer they claim gave them something other than coke, so they stole the dealer's cellphone and backpack, then tried to extort the dealer for his stuff.  The dealer called the cops (interesting twist, not sure if coke is legal there or the guy wasn't actually selling anything illegal or how that part works), who went with him to the drop off.  Cops jump out of the bushes (not really), drop off goes south, the kid who's parents are concerned won't survive prison stabbed the cop 11 times and left him for dead in the street, claiming no one knew it was a cop.

Nothing substantial about the either of the kid's previous records, but I doubt it's their first time buying drugs, and the parent's concern is about this one's history of suicide attempts.  Sounds like a case of parents need to look in the mirror and admit the role their actions or lack of actions played in getting to this point.  Not dumping all the blame on the parents, kid made his bed and needs to lay in it, but I'll bet a good stack of cash that the string of decision that led to the murder are not the only decisions that could have been made differently by many people involved in this kid's life.

I keep saying kid not because youth absolves, but because I see no need to give his name more hits, and cause most 18-19 year olds still think like kids, despite the law saying otherwise.

They did not do the analysis.  If the kid commits suicide it shortens his sentence!
