Crockpot recipes
« on: March 09, 2008, 05:38:42 PM »
Just this week I got a new and decent crock pot.  I was using this thingy that really just a pot on a hot plate that was a hand-me-down from my mom.  The old one was never that good so I didn't really get into this crock pot goodness.

Now, I need some good recipes, so everyone post your favorite or two crock pot recipes.  :)

Here's what I'm making tonight...

Take however many cubesteaks you want/need for your family, along with howver many can, or oz of fresh mushrooms you like (we love them, so we put in 3 small cans for our family of 5), and about 2-3 cups of brown gravy (I use a dry mix, then make it with the water from the mushroom cans).    I mix the gravy in the crockpot first, then layer in the cubesteaks (I put them in frozen), then the mushrooms on top.  Cook on low for 4 -6 hours, turning the steaks over once about hald way through.

I serve it with/over mashed potatos.

Take an ostrich and an orange.  For God's sake don't name the ostrich (nor the orange).

Put the orange in the oven -- the ostrich will follow it in -- then slam the oven door and trap the ostrich's head in until it passes out.

Lug the carcass out to a jacuzzi and let it jacuzz for 3 or 4 hours.  The feathers should be pretty easy to remove now.

Lug the now-defeathered carcass back into the house.  Put it into the bathtub with an emulsion of warm water, carrots, onions and 100 chicken bullion cubes.  You can enhance as you wish at this point.

After 12 hours or so the skin and meat should just slide off the bone. About an hour before serving add 20 potatoes.

Ostrich stew -- yum yum.

That is my crackpot recipe.

If you want to worship an orange pile of garbage with a reckless disregard for everything, get on down to Arbys & try our loaded curly fries.

Guinness Beef Stew

1 1/4 lbs boneless beef chuck
2 tbsp flour or cornstarch
salt & pepper
1 large onion, chopped
3 potatoes, quartered and sliced into 1/2 in pieces
2 carrots, sliced
4 cloves garlic
1 tbsp tomato paste
1 c beef broth
14 oz. Guinness Irish Stout
1 tbsp worcestershire sauce
thyme

1. Toss the meat with the cornstarch and salt and pepper to coat; brown in a large, deep, oven proof pot over medium-high heat with a shot of oil.

2. Remove meat and add onions and garlic; saute until translucent.

3. Add paste, broth, stout, and worcestershire sauce, along with seasonings. Bring to a boil and deglaze pan (add to the crockpot at this point if using); reduce to a simmer

4. Add potatoes and carrots, cover tightly and cook at 350 for about 1.5 hours (or let it cook all day in crockpot)

5. Serve with a pan of cornbread

Could you not cook this in the tub by setting the house on fire?

Crockpot Hot Dogs

-Add 1/4 inch water to bottom of pot
-Add (how ever many) wieners to bottom of pot
-Cook on medium-low heat overnight

In the morning, take out wieners
Lay inside fresh hot dog buns
Dress with mustard, relish, whatever

Enjoy!

I'm going to try this probably next week (I've already done my grocery shopping for this week).

I'll tweak my green chili recipe for you.  It's not for the faint of heart.

Mexican chicken stuff in a crock pot

Spray crock pot down with Pam
Place 4-5 boneless skinless chicken breasts in the bottom of the crock pot
Dump in a jar of salsa (whatever kind you like the most)
Dump in a can of black beans
"   " of corn
Add one package of taco seasoning
Cook on high 4-6 hours until chicken forks easily
Add in one or two blocks of cream cheese
Add in at least one cup if taco cheese/cheddar cheese/ colby jack/whatever cheese
When the cream cheese and regular cheese melt in stir it all up really well

Serve with tortilla chips to dip, soft tortillas to make burritos, or over rice

It looks absolutely disgusting but it tastes so freaking good!!!!! :cheersmate:

This sounds good...wonder if my kids would eat it.   Is the cream cheese mandatory, or do you think extra cheddar/colby would work?

Sounds delish!!! But I don't like rubbery chicken and find that crockpots turn chicken into something squishy. I like my chicken well done and firm. Can you cook it beforehand in skillet and then throw it in? Can you reduce the amounts of cheese too?

My daughter eats it but my son won't.  They are 9 & 8 years old.
You can sub in or subtract whatever you want.  I like squishy chicken in this recipe but I don't think cooking everything else in together and then adding the chicken would matter.

mama, one more question....I'm assuming you drain the corn and black beans first?  And do you rinse the beans or does the "stuff" make the flavor?

I drain the corn but not the black beans.  I don't know why.  Bean juice is just cool looking I guess?

ok mama, I tried this last night...it was pretty good, but I think I put too much cheese in it, as it muted the spice a lot.  Next time I'm probably nix the cream cheese and stick with cheddar, and probably add a can of diced jalpenos.  My oldest son devoured it, my youngest son, after threatening to starve him if he didn't try it thought it was "ok" and my daughter said there was no flavor to it ( we like things spicey).   I like it, but agree that it could be "kicked up a notch".

Definately a keeper, though.
