Screw that, as far as "might work for now" goes, Republicans have exactly zero to lose by digging their heels in deep and saying to Hell with that at this point. In fact the bigger GM flops the better, as far as breaking the UAW's political power, and the "Miracle" (cough) of Michigan Democrat government are concerned.
The Big Three management have their share of blame for not keeping the UAW in sane bounds in the past, both the industry and the union behaved as if there was no tomorrow and for all intents and purposes projected an unending growth spiral without threatening competition, which is the only economic model that could support what they did. But tomorrow is here and that isn't what happened, I say Chapter 11s all around for the stupid gits.
