By no means am I any kind of biblical scholar, but I'd say that the advent of the "don't take the Bible literally" schtick counts for much of the 88% who don't lean toward the Scriptures.
I'd prefer to see hypocrisy where it lies, up front close and personal. Get a good whiff of it, just to detect the rot and the incredible sense of delusion that it reveals.
Feel good, PC preachers have a lot to do with it too. Most large churches don't want to scare off and/or offend people, so they don't preach uncomfortable things like we are all sinners, there are only two options when we die (Heaven or Hell), Jesus is the only way to heaven, you can't earn your way into heaven, and just cause the world says fill in the blank is ok doesn't mean God does.
Lack of Biblical literacy and accepting the literalness of it digs the hole deeper.
Being a scholar isn't necessary. Know it, read it, get a little bit better with it every day. When we fall off, as we all do, get back on and keep moving forward.
