NEW YORK: California has become the first US state to ban use of trans fats, long linked to health problems and obesity, in restaurants and bakeries.

Under a new bill signed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger yesterday, the restaurants are required to phase out the use of trans fats and excise them completely by 2010 and in all retail baked goods by 2011. Packaged food will be exempt.

Earlier, New York City had banned their use from July 1 this year. Some other cities, including Philadelphia, have also made similar laws.

But California will be the first to ban their use in more than 80,000 restaurants and bakeries across the State. Those who violate the law would be fined USD 25 for first violation and it would progressive increase for subsequent violations rising to USD 1000.

The ban on synthetic fat comes in the wake of intensive movement launched by health professionals and consumer advocates who blame them for heart and other diseases.

"I think the potential here is real for a far greater understanding of the harms of trans fats, and to encourage more states to do the same," Dr Clyde Yancy, incoming president of the American Heart Association was quoted in a media report as saying.

Restaurant and bakery operators prefer trans fats as they are inexpensive. Trans fats are prepared by passing hydrogen into liquid oil at high temperature to produce what is called partially hydrogenated product.

Dido, Nanny Statism is on the East and West coast and creeping toward the centeral U.S. Is this what our grant U.S.A. is coming to. Will the state and federal government continue to shove statism down our throats and end up like China and Russia. The Euro isn't far behind. Today trans fats and tomorrow the Euro and what colors underwear you wear on Wedesday. (The New Statism) alternativeinsight.com

Glad I do not live in the kool-aid state. Between Arnuld loving the fags, high taxes and now telling people what they can cook with, this state sucks. If these yahoos are so concerned about health issues, they should ban cold drink, candy and cookie machines from all schools.

One reason I did not want Arnold as governor. Actually, I wanted him to stay in Hollywood because I like his and needs to be in movies. Seriously, this just another form of statism and I see that trend coming to America and it scares me. It is no surprise that CA is falling apart. People are leaving in droves and they are getting hit hard with the banking and mortgage meltdown. Bannin trans-fats is not even a priority to me. Anyways, I hate margarine and prefer butter. And yes, I do like good old lard. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

It is curious that Ah-nold of KALI-FORN-YA seems singularly uninterested in steriod abuse but is eager to tell us what we can eat and how to cook it. But, that what you get when you hire a body builder to run a State. Kali's completely out of control.

Everyone who eats food will eventually die.  Food must be banned.   :whatever:

We should be more concerned about DiHydrogen Monoxide.

Quote
Dihydrogen monoxide:
is also known as hydroxyl acid, and is the major component of acid rain.
contributes to the "greenhouse effect."
may cause severe burns.
contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.
accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.
may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.
has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.
contamination has been found in all floodwaters where death has occurred and violent thunderstorm rains containing destructive lightning.
changing from crystalline to liquid is a leading cause of the destruction of arctic ice and glaciers.

Contamination Is Reaching Epidemic Proportions!
Quantities of dihydrogen monoxide have been found in almost every stream, lake, and reservoir in America today. But the pollution is global, and the contaminant has even been found in Antarctic ice. DHMO has caused millions of dollars of property damage in the midwest, and recently California. DHMO contamination is even found in most cells in the human body!
