I can't remember specific ones of the originals that I liked, but my favorite CYOA spin-off was the "Lone Wolf" series, which were simply fantastic:

I remember one that sent you back in time to die from the Plauge.

Yeah, I recall they had some pretty nasty deaths in some (all?) of the books.

I used to have a bit of a collection of those, back when I was a runt.

I recall them quite unfondly(wrd?)

I used to set the world speed record on those things for fast ugly death. lol

Funny story, I cheated on a book report using one of those books back in the day. I did a 2 page report on a book in which I died in like four pages. Teacher made me have a do-over on a "real" book.  :( OK it wasn't that funny. Still. No "good" memories associated with CYOA books.
"When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion - when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing - when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors - when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don't protect you against them, but protect them against you - when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice - you may know that your society is doomed."

That's teacher was a close-minded jerk.  I'd have let kids do book reports on CYOA books.  At least they got kids reading!  And they'd read them more than once, so that's a bonus, too.
