With both of them, the real issue is neither 9/11 nor Obama's birthplace. The real issue finding a way to fundamentally illegitimate the leader they despise. In Bush's case, it's claiming he caused 9/11. In Obama's case, it's claiming he was born in Kenya. In both cases, it's an attempt to portray the president as somebody who isn't one of us, i.e. an American who fights terrorism or an American in the first place.4
