SAWSTOP in TimeWarp
« on: April 15, 2011, 11:33:10 AM »
The good dudes at Discovery’s Timewarp TV show filmed a hide-your-eyes segment about the SawStop, a table saw with an electronically controlled safety brake that uses the inductive capabilities of the human skin to immediately stop the blade. Watch as the saw’s inventor offers to sacrifice his own finger to demonstrate the safety of his creation.

not sure if this is available to consumers yet but imagine the fingers and hands it would save.

Kinda looks like a piece of the blade came off during the stop, but that's a small price to pay for a digit or even a limb.

IIRC the saw is totally destroyed by the stopping mechanism.

The saw itself, or just the blade?

Totally agree with that. A small price to pay.  :cheersmate:

The saw itself, or just the blade?

The first time I saw it on TV, it totaled the whole thing.  But from namvets last post, maybe they improved it.

I wonder if that kind of mechanism can be applied to other types of rotating equipment?? (Band Saws, Drills, wood chippers, and most everything else like that)

And yes, I've drilled through and ground my hands.  :thatsright:

I would think sooner or later it would be in all types of power tools.

Just wait until the government mandates it and the cost jumps by a factor of 10.

Pretty cool invention though.
