Tampa Mom Makes Son Stand on Street Corner For Low GPA
« on: February 23, 2011, 05:52:12 PM »
Curious what some parent's thoughts are. I don't have any problems with this approach. Kid doesn't have a sensitive ego. Quite the opposite, punk needs to learn some humility.

Honestly, positive behavior supports are the only proven method of effecting long term behavior modification.   That said, this kid is a punk and mom is doing the best she can.

I hope it opens his eyes to what his future holds if he doesn't pull his head out of his ass.

Though, neither she nor the boy's father tried to help him with his homework, they grounded him, took away his cell phone, and gave him lecture after lecture to get him to raise his grades, but nothing worked.

The mother or father could have found a tutor for their son if they were unable to help.

A hair cut and clothing that fits helps in this matter.

Grab that little hoodlum by the scruff of the neck and get his hair cut, darn he looks like a sheep dog.  Make him wear clothing that fits not down to his knees and no T Shirts, a shirt with a collar, pants with a belt.

Let that kid know that as his mother is a hairdresser he will be tied up and  hair cut  ever month until he gets his grades up, no earrings or face piercings, they have to earned with a B at least in 3 subjects. Hair is not to be anyway longer then 2 inches until he puts some effort into school.  No bandannas or ball caps or other gang related symbols.

I missed the age of this Punk but curfew of 6 PM school nights and 9 pm. weekends ----

I see why now back in the old days people would lock up problem relitives in the attic.

I think this approach is awesome!  I am so glad that there are still parents who care enough about their kid to NOT be their friends.

Sometimes teenage kids just need their asses kicked.  Unfortunately this is about as close as parents can legally go to that anymore.

I think it's a bit extreme but it is nice to see a parent not trying to be their child's best friend.

Ok...

What makes a couple of you think that this kid is a punk?  Just the way he looked in the video?  I didn't see anything in that article that mentioned that he was a smartass toward his parents/teachers etc...

That said....  I wonder if this kid has always done poorly in school or if it was a recent development.  If it's the former, waiting until he is 15 to do anything about it is waiting too long.

If it's the later I'd start looking at possible drug use and start looking at who he hangs out with.

My kids are both grown and living on their own.  While I try to be their friend I am STILL their parent 1st and foremost.  If they are ****ing up, they still hear about it from me.

In fact, the last straw came when he got an F in gym class on his latest report card.

An F in gym class?   yeah, he's a punk.

Got an F in gym class so he's a punk?

Would he be a punk if he got an F in English class or math?

I bet if it were a clean cut white boy on that corner....

I can agree with the tough love of it but I don't know if they actually "cared" that much

Got an F in gym class so he's a punk?

Exactly -- unless he has significant developmental delays, all he has to do is show up, listen, and participate to get a passing grade.   F in gym usually means he is a now show, disrupts class when he is there, and does not listen or participate.

I wasn't offended.  I wish the belt would work on him.  It worked on mine and my brother's asses growing up.  It doesn't do anything to my son

when he becomes interested in a hobby, he becomes obsessed with it but not in a bad way

only thing his teachers say is he is all over the place and a class clown.

I think he is lazy, wants us to give him the answers and that is our fault.

I don't think he has anything like autism or asperger's or anything like that and have parent's that do have children with those conditions say he doesn't.

Right now I am having the teachers fill out forms to give to his pedi

Yeh, I want to say he is too smart for his own good and is bored but then again I don't like to brag about my kids that way.  He loves all things war, guns, hunting...he just hates reading and math.  He doesn't get into trouble at school except for yapping.

There are a lot of diagnosis he could have -- I could spew off about 3 of them from  what you wrote, but that is all speculation from someone who has never laid eyes on him.    Looks like you are getting evals done, so that is excellent.  Hopefully you will some answers soon.

Note that the far majority of ten year old students want to be good in class.   They honestly don't like to be called out for aberrant behaviors.  If he is struggling with attending because he has some issues going on, then you will know and will know what you need to do to teach him the critical skill of self-regulation.

Good luck with the testing.

on the poing of attending school, my son has never missed a day of school in his life.  Always gets perfect attendance at the end of the school year.  He just has a problem keeping his mind on the subject instead of goofing off.
