At 103, HISD retiree still 'igniting a fire'

After 90 years, Hazel Hainsworth Young still remembers her teacher father's elegant handwriting, the crisp, starched white blouse that became a high school Latin teacher's trademark, the library books that opened her mind to a wider world — in short, all the factors, great and small, that propelled her into an educator's career that spanned eight decades.

Young, at 103 the last living member of Jack Yates High School's inaugural 1926 faculty, was honored Wednesday by the Houston Independent School District for her lengthy service.

Young, who began as a substitute teacher at Yates and later taught Latin and held administrative positions, has been active in the past three years in recruiting college students and members of community service groups to volunteer at the largely African-American school.
