I think the problem might be that the primitive didn't issue an ultimatum with their threat of needing real news.

Something like "There had better be real news, or I'm going to decapitate myself with a rusty saw.", or "There had better be real news, or I'm going to drown myself in the bathtub."

Following through with their ultimatum would almost certainly bring big news.
