Mariah Parker was sworn in this week to represent District 2 on the Athens-Clarke County Commission and refused to take her oath of office on the Bible. “They asked if I would like the Bible and I said no. My mother asked if there was a copy of the Constitution around. No,” Parker said. “I wanted Malcolm’s book. I think they saw it coming.”‘On Monday, the 26-year-old University of Georgia doctoral student was sworn in as an Athens-Clarke County Commissioner. When she took her oath of office, she was didn't use a bible. On the steps of the Athens City Hall, Parker cocked her right fist in the air and place her left hand on a well-worn copy of “The Autobiography of Malcolm X,” held by her mother, Mattie Parker. Probate Judge Susan Tate swore her in as the District 2 commissioner.’
The book actually ends on a unifying and peaceful message about the brotherhood of Man, but I'm guessing that's not what she got out of it.
