Title: New Job!
Post by: Texacon on August 02, 2017, 12:30:39 PM
''Tis the season for new jobs apparently. I gave a 2 week notice to my employer on Monday the 31st and they escorted me out of the building at 4:00 that afternoon.  :rotf:

I'm really excited about my new opportunity, which will start on the 14th. I really liked the company I left, but management was less than desirable. I really think there will be a big shake up in that company before long. The day I gave notice so did another project manager. That is 3 casualties of the new management in less than 4 months.

It all worked out though, new company, more freedom to be the professional I am, a very substantial increase in pay.

I remember when I left my previous (before the last) job.  I was one of 4 upper managers that all resigned in the same month.  Same deal: really bad management -- heavy on unreasonable expectations/attitude and light/nonexistent on rewards (financial and other).

Best of luck on your new job!  I am sure you will succeed wildly.

Wait! You got a new job without bleating for months here on CC about how horrible your old job was? Without paeans to Lord Obamamort and whines about the Trump Economy? How is that possible?!

Congratulations! Sounds like your former manglement are really petty or you had keys to kingdoms they were afraid you'd misuse. Or both.

I gave a two week notice to a former employer and the "big" boss comes by and says, "you can leave anytime".

So I called the new boss that night and he says, "you can start anytime you like".

Next day I tell the "big" boss I'm leaving as of the end of the day. HE says, BUT YOU said two weeks. I said but YOU SAID ANYTIME.  :lmao:

I've had a lot of jobs in my life and I've never had a manager as bad as this guy. He was great at his job before the last 2 promotions. I mean, before he was in charge of any people, his skills were top notch. His boss, the guy who just promoted him, told me that when he told others in the corporate office that he was going to make this guy our division manager, they told him he was crazy and it would never work.

This new promotion got HR called on him 3 times that I know of. Just an extremely abrasive guy who is a huge micromanager. Had to know where we were at all times, questioned our motives every time we needed to leave the office (and we did a lot of traveling to job sites), felt like we should travel 'on our own time', yet we were all salaried, loved to yell at you and would call you out in a group. Most of the time he was wrong when he was yelling at you and once proven wrong, would never apologize.

Absolutely horrible atmosphere that no one should put up with. It wasn't just me. Absolutely everyone in the office, 100%, disliked this guy and would cheer whenever he was gone.

No need to cry about it, just had to fix it and wait for the right opportunity to come along.

Yeah, they walked me out because I was privy to sensitive information and left to go to work for a competitor. One that understands there is a give and take to being salaried. This guy just promised more work. You WERE going to be there for 40 at the least, but more often than not it was closer to 55-60. Need a couple of hours to go to the doctor?  No problem, just make sure you account for it on your vacation hours.

Seriously.

LOL!

I could go to work tomorrow, but I told the new company I wanted a little time to decompress. Plus I have some medical tests coming up I don't want getting in the way.

My former employer offered me a "severance" package that was little more than a legal agreement for me not to badmouth them, not to initiate a lawsuit against them, or not go to work for a competitor. The "severance" part included a paltry one-month's salary and "help" from some kind of bullshit search firm.

That signed document never made it to the employer. And, I'm going to work for a competitor.

**** 'em.

More to the point, congratulations on the step up!

Thanks Ralph!!  This is gonna be fun. I'm pretty excited. These last 4 years were pretty tough.

Just heard today that another employee may be fixing to bail.

Good for you Euph!  I'm really excited for you and will let you know the next time I'm going to be up in your new neck of the woods.

Thanks for the congrats. I'm shocked how many folks in my industry have been contacting me over the last 3 days. I've had 2 of them tell me they wish they'd known I was looking and that if this doesn't workout to give them a chance.

FWIIW, that practice is illegal.  If you are exempt (salaried), time spent on the job site is supposed to be evaluated in days, not hours.  So if you are off of work for even 5 hours on a day, if you show up for work those 5 hours are NOT to be docked.  This is because exempt employees are supposed to be evaluated on task performance not hours spent.  When the whole exempt vs. non-exempt thing blew up in the 80s, legal counsel had seminars for us in management to explain what you could and could not do with exempt and non-exempt.  That included lunch breaks for non-exempt (they are not allowed to volunteer their lunch breaks w/o 1.5 time pay) and the PTO time situation.

If you have records you could sue them, if it is worth the hassle

That is really interesting. No, I'd never sue them, but you would not believe just how petty they were on hours. And it's not the company, it was my boss and his boss. Think about this;

We worked a 9/80 schedule. 4/9's one week, 4/9's & 1/8, the next.

The company gave us 11 holidays/year, but a holiday was 8 hours pay.

My bosses boss started making us work 9 hours on the Friday we worked and only put 8 on our 'time sheet', so when there was a holiday that fell on a week where you were normally off that Friday, you could put 10 hours on one of your days to make up for the hour the company wasn't paying you for the holiday. Hope that makes sense.

Now that scenario only happens about 3-4 times per year, but now we were required to work 26 hours per year for the privilege of having a 9/80 schedule.

Wish I'd known this information earlier, though. I'd have brought it up to my bosses boss. They never understood the concept of being salaried. They both have hourly wage employee mindsets.

The last job I had, I started out just loving it.  Then the big boss humiliated a woman in front of a large group, and it soured me on the whole thing from then on.  What an asshole.  He loved doing this.

The last time I gave a two weeks notice that was not honored by the company I was working for I ended up qualifying for unemployment as they terminated my employment.
