A South Korean naval vessel with more than 100 aboard was sinking on Friday in waters near North Korea and Seoul was investigating whether it was hit in a torpedo attack by the North, South Korean media said.

Broadcaster SBS said many South Korean sailors on the stricken vessel were feared dead.

South Korea's YTN TV network said the government was investigating whether the sinking was due to a torpedo attack by the North, and Yonhap news agency said the Seoul government had convened an emergency meeting of security-related ministers. ...

Reuters is saying that a South Korean ship fired at an unidentified ship in return.

Now saying likely not a torpedo. SK government has not outwardly blamed NK. Still investigating. Ship has fully sunk. I do not know how many are dead.

The US is apparently agressively in contact with SK to forstall any military response.

I bet you 10 bucks the norks did sink the ship (in one form or another) and the kenyan is begging the SK's not to start a war. I like how it goes from a NK attack to "we dont knwo for sure"

There were 100 people on board and 40 are believed to be dead. If North Korea attacks, that is an act of war. Technically, South and North Korea are still at war.

They will not admit it but we have been at war with NK since the 50's
They NEVER signed any treaty to end the war with them thus we are technicaly at war with them until they do sing such a treaty.

Of course we are.   :whatever:  N. Korea could probably nuke Seoul and Obama will want to talk peace.

more news...

they are saying it was definitely not an internal explosion and they say it was probably a mine. Still won't come out and blame NK.

A drive-by mining??

Considering the location, it could be either country who had that mine (if in fact that was what it is.)

They have announced that North Korea has been ruled out as the cause. Same with a reef or internal explosion.

There is a good chance that they hit an SK mine from a while back.

That would be really bad for the SK government. I am sure they are busy looking for a scapegoat if that is the case.

Any damaged US subs pull into Norfolk since then?

Pearl's closer.  That's where USS Greenville went when she got in trouble playing tag with the fishing boats.

True.

I wasn't even thinking about Pearl.

Yoko would be closer.  We also have made port calls in Chinhae.

That being said, the water there is 20 METERS deep.  Yeah, I don't think any submarines from ANY nation were involved in this one.
