SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A conservative-backed initiative to publish voter registration records from across the country online for public consumption can move forward over the objections of New Mexico election regulators, a federal judge has ordered in a preliminary opinion.

Albuquerque-based U.S. District Court Judge James Browning issued an order last Friday preventing New Mexico state prosecutors from pursuing allegations of possible election code violations against the creators of VoteRef.com.

The VoteRef.com website provides searchable access to voter registration records by name and street addresses, often indicating when people voted in past elections.

The online records do not say for which candidates the people voted or how they voted on initatives. Party affiliation is listed for voters in some states but not all.


The party of "Harass Republicans Wherever and Whenever You Feel Like It" seems a little hypocritical, no?

Remember when California and other Blue states published the names and home addresses of concealed carry permit holders?  I do.

This can't be something new.  I've done searches on people and one of the line items is "X is a registered member of the Republican party."  Also, I remember campaigns in the past where one dude says about the other dude "He didn't even bother to vote in the last two elections!!"

Judging from some of Tess' posts. how one is registered seems to be public record in at least some states. I guess this is news to some/many DU-folk. In CA, political contributions are also public record (unless it was changed recently), e.g. https://news.yahoo.com/mozilla-says-ceo-resigns-amid-gay-marriage-controversy-195338477.html . I haven't used Firefox for 7 or 8 years because of that incident.
