Title: live election thread
Post by: franksolich on October 31, 2014, 11:21:21 AM
There's going to be another live election thread, in the Politics forum, for general stuff, but this one's for primitive reactions to the elections.

Nobody really knows what's going to happen; all we can do is sit back, relax, get mellow, and patiently wait.

Since there's likely to be tons of election threads on Skins's island election night, decent and civilized people might get overwhelmed by all the copying-and-pasting demanded, and simply give up.

We don't want that to happen; one's free to post free-standing threads about the primitive reactions--in fact, one's encouraged to--but in case time and energy isn't enough, one can post links here to primitive comments one finds eminently worthwhile, with maybe half a sentence of summary of each thread's highlight.

Examples:

Quote
www.link
Atman promises suicide

Quote
www.link
Skippy accidentally detonates nuclear device over San Francisco before votes are counted

Quote
www.link
MrsCorpio finds out he's not God after all

Quote
www.link
primitives allege racism  responsible for losses

Quote
www.link
Big Mo gets arrested for trying to vote in Wisconsin

^^^something along those lines.

Also, since Skins's island's bound to be locked down that evening, this is a handy place for those with moles to illuminate those without moles, about what's going on behind the curtain.

This campfire of his was lit the morning after the elections.

Apparently Atman thought he would come over and see us in disarray.

I dunno; I'm not simple-minded enough to understand what goes on in his head.

I'm curious, though.

What did the evil twin expect to see here, the morning after the elections?

Should be entertaining.  Apparently exit polling from early voting is not going all that well for them, to the extent it means anything at all.

Democrats Count on Edge With Women to Limit Election Losses

WASHINGTON — Democrats are nervously counting on an enduring edge among female voters in most states to prevent a Republican rout in Tuesday’s elections. Yet so great is the uncertainty that even before the returns are in, some are second-guessing the party’s strategy of focusing more on issues like abortion and birth control than on jobs and the economy.

Oh it means something. It steals away their "stolen election" rally cry.
We all know they'll use it anyways-they will just sound more pathetic this year.

I would like my fellow DU watchers to link and quote the calls for violence and revolution.

I would like permission to link/post to other leftist sites as well. maybe in  a separate thread.

I'm going to indulge in some reminiscencing here.

No, there's no sex in it.

May 17, 1995 was the happiest day of my life--never had one happier before, never had one happier since--the day I learned that the Republicans had taken over both houses of Congress the preceding November (and for the first time in my whole entire life, the House of Representatives), and that Nebraska had won the national championship in college football the preceding January.

I was out in the remote steppes of southwestern Russia when a package from home found its way to me.

When wandering around the socialist paradises of the workers and peasants, it was as if I were truly on the dark side of the moon, out of contact with the civilized world.  For obvious reasons, I could never use a telephone (and at $25, American currency only, for three minutes), and the internet was still aborning, meaning e-mail wasn't in general use yet.

I wrote letters home.  People back home wrote letters to me.

Which generally took 2-3 months to arrive at either destination, many times mistakenly misdirected to Cuba or Cameroon or China first (as the markings on the envelopes betrayed).

The socialist paradises were in considerable disarray at the time, utter chaos and anarchy and shambles, and English-language "resources" were rare, if at all.

So I always received news from home.....rather late.

On the sunny afternoon of May 17, 1995, the socialist post office delivered to me a package that had been sent shortly after the new year began five months previously.  It was from Omaha.

The package of course had been rifled, there being hardly anything left in it besides crumpled-up editions of the Omaha World-Herald, used for padding.

The crumpled-up newspapers were from the day after election day November 1994 and a couple of days after the bowl games January 1995.  This wasn't by mere lucky chance; this was on purpose.

I read the news, and let out a roar that surely was heard as far away as the Caucasus Mountains.

Then I rushed out of the cottage and did cart-wheels and hand-springs across the knee-high grass of the Russian steppes.

My faith in humanity having been restored--sometimes good guys win after all--the day after that, having been away for so long, I finally made arrangements to come back home, to come back to an America where Hope had recrudesced.

I used to think that the Republicans would pick up 10 House seats, net, and 9 Senate seats.  I'd like to go up to 13 House seat net gain, and 11 Senate seat net gain.  There will be upsets that we don't know about on the national level.

Okay, I'm going to need a volunteer, preferably at least two, to run this thread election night, as I plan to run the one in the Politics forum (not yet set up; it will be later today).

<<<has to keep a low profile so the primitives don't get worried and upset thinking franksolich is "up to something," getting paranoid about it.

<<<a nice guy; finds it troubling when the primitives get all paranoid.

Anyway.

One, two, or three people who will be around election night, or a substantial part of the night, to keep this thread jiggling along.

What Ballygrl used to do, and it worked well, was follow twitter and post from there, while others posted primitive reactions from Skins's island.  One's free to do something similar, posting from twitter or DU Jr. or wherever, if one wishes--the objective being to keep this thread hopping.

Thanks.

I just did a quick check at TruthIsAll's little isle of self-exile to see what he has been up to.

It seems he has adapted his silly 'Martingale Gambling' system (because it really isn't a 'Monte Carlo' simulation, regardless of what he says) to prove the conspiracy behind the JFK assassination, and is hawking a book based on it.

Seriously.

Hopefully he comes out of the woodwork to 'prove' that the results are fraudulent. = which is always fun.  :-)

But you got a bunch of crazies here who think sending her back to DC will send some message to Gov. McCrory and the State legislature.

Any party leader worth their salt would have compiled a list of achievements and sent it to every single frickin Dem to constantly throw to the press.

We let the right define that Obama failed. Most Dems co-opted. The idea has reached critical mass. But it is not true ! And even the press doesn't challenge

DWS should step down and we need a true PR genius type with a great organizationally skilled team to take full and complete charge.

Call me naive/partisan/insulated/etc., but I still can't figure out what people are voting against.
This is supposed to be a referendum on the president, and not necessarily an endorsement of the Geriatric Oligarchy Party. OK, but where's the beef?

The economy is improving; of course the long climb out of the Great Recession has been quicker for Wall St. than it has been for employment, a lagging indicator in any economy, but you mean to tell me a majority of the American people now trust Republicans on the economy? On what grounds?

We soundly rejected Cowboy Diplomacy in 2006 and 2008 after two failed wars, and reelected the president a year after removing our troops from Iraq. You mean to tell me a majority of the American people now trust Republicans on foreign affairs? What for? We're not "tough enough"? Do we trust Republicans to win a war in two countries we cannot control, with allies we cannot trust, who are fighting a religious civil war we cannot understand? Are we supposed to go to war with Russia? The Washington Post opinion section is almost daily filled with pearl-clutching articles about how scarily "detached" the president is, because supposedly the preferable norm is to flip our shit and lash out without thinking; that's leadership. Do voters agree?

Opposition to the Affordable Care has slowed to a trickle, at least measured by press treatment. And now, a year into the employer mandate implementation, Republicans will have to explain how to replace the coverage of millions who have ACA-backed coverage - at least, I hope they'll have to. That hinges on covered persons knowing they're actually benefitting from the program, and I'd bet a good chunk of them are the "I've never asked for a government handout" types on SS disability/Medicare/etc.

So, what exactly is the complaint against the president? I understood 2006 - bogged down in an Iraqi civil war, fresh off the response to Katrina, spending 2005 trying to privatize Social Security...all reasons to flip the legislature. But in 2014 I just don't see a) what's going wrong, or at least b) how it's the president's fault. What's gnawing at the average voter?

Dummie mom of four doesn't get it.

Quote
Mother Of Four (1,440 posts)

I don't get it... I just don't
My husband just went to bed, he had the range today and was bone tired. He really wanted to stay up for results but couldn't do it. We took our family, plus our grown kids friends to go vote. We got three more to vote this time then last, so that's a good thing.

Even with that good thing, when we got home hub and I had a talk and I just don't get it. If we were to vote for only our own benefit instead of the country's, then we would have gone red. We are all blue. Why are we blue? We're blue because we give a damn about our friends and neighbors, we give a damn about our future grand kids. We CARE about what happens to the people without health insurance. We fricken CARE about more than ourselves. We want safe schools, good roads, healthy people. We don't want to see even one more child die because of guns. We want living wages, womens rights that we have already kept intact, and those threatened beaten down with a stick (reproductive rights). We want equal pay for equal work because it's good for ALL OF US.

It was a progression for us to go blue, slow but steady. It was a progression that was right, and it's really the only moral way we can see.

I want to shake people and yell at them "If we can't stand together we ALL fall. ALL of us."

I don't understand. I really don't. I get like this every election, I get sick and sad. Normally I try to paste on good vibes but for some reason this time is hitting me super hard. Thanks for letting me vent

Not a problem. There are things that I have set to thwart DDoS. - I learned how to mitigate it years ago, as one of the other sites I host is also subject to it. LSN (The company that houses the server) also does things to mitigate attacks. The usual effect is slow response at the targeted site until it ends, to stop damage that can occur to the database and whatnot during a robust attack. If it is too intense, all of the affected site's traffic will be sent to /null until it passes.

Then you're in the wrong party. How many have you enslaved to the government for generations? How many spirits are broken? How many no longer wouldn't even know how to survive on their own? How many are threatened and driven to fear every election and then ignored the rest of the year? How many have never had more than enough welfare to just barely survive? Who've never had a hand up? You people are the same slave owners you've always been, you've just convinced poor minorities that you care.

Their liberal bubbles are shattering tonight.

Yeah, the hammering from all sides stopped pretty much at midnight, EST.  I spent some time looking at it as it was coming in. It was pretty heavy, but not devastating. I'm pretty sure that it was a DDoS, but smaller than the one that took CC offline before I took over hosting it.

The only question now is is this coverage better than the 2010 meltdown?  Because that one was simple epic!

We should just refer to this Country as the United States of the Koch Brothers from this day forward

From College Park, Maryland, I sit here devastated.

Hogan is a tea-party type Republican. He opposes handgun background checks, thinks everyone who wants to own an assault rifle should be able to have one. Crime is already up in this state and that is just what we need -- people walking around with assault rifles.

Do you want to know what happened? Non-stop ads running the last couple of weeks -- probably financed by the Koch Brothers -- touting all the tax increases during this administration. I could not believe it. And Brown did not answer them.

We should just rename the Country the United States of the Koch Brothers because they along with the other billionaires own the Country now. We are just the minions who are led to believe by the press and our corrupt politicians that we actually have honest elections here. It is inconceivable to me that there were so many virtual ties in tonight's elections and the Republicans had all the successes they did.

And I think I am done with MSNBC and its tilted reporting. I had to turn the television off. Keith Olbermann sure called it correctly when he started looking for another job so he could leave that network. He privately said with Comcast's partnering up with NBC, he (Olbermann) would be muzzled. I could not believe some of the comments, really stupid remarks, made by the panel this evening. One of the standout offenses was made by Andrea Mitchell who said in effect this loss would ruin O'Malley's chance to run for President in 2016.

The only honest broker was Ed, who was reporting in Florida. Clearly, he was disturbed by what he was seeing.

This is a nightmare, and I cannot believe people are blaming Obama.

Obama suffered an ignominious distinction. The president, whose party lost 63 seats in 2010, saw Democrats lose 12 seats and became the two-term president with the most midterm defeats, edging past Truman's 74 by one.

Second Amendment Crushes Gun Control Candidates in Midterm Elections

As the election returns came in on November 4 one thing was evident—the Second Amendment crushed gun control candidates in Senate and gubernatorial races around the country.

In so doing, the Second Amendment annihilated the left's relentless claim that 90 percent of Americans support more gun control.....

Okay now, the election's over, and the people have spoken, loud and clear.

The Republicans had heretofore "owned" one-sixth of the government, the House of Representatives, and the Democrats five-sixths--the Senate, the White House, and the left-leaning Supreme Court.

(For lurking primitives who don't know, the House and the Senate are the legislative branch, the White House the executive branch, and the Supreme Court the judicial branch--each of the three branches being exactly the equal of the other two.)

We now own one-third of the government.

However, even though twice as much as what we'd owned before, that's still a minority, and the majority rules.

So whatever happens is still the fault of the party that owns the majority of the government.  The Democrats own it; they ain't getting off the hook.

So the Republican landslide was really just a technicality.

Obama said that the 2/3 that didn't vote gave their consent to him by not voting against him.  I say Obama is an arrogant prick who hates the US and will do whatever he can to make her fall and unless he disagrees personally, on this board, then he gives his consent to that being true.

I had a lib dipshit try this line on me at work today.   If you look at the swing states, midterm voting was UP.  It was in places like WA/CA/NY, etc where turnout was down.  Places like CO/NC/FL etc were up, or like IA, were only a tenth of a percent down from 2010.

I also let my "friend" know that although only 36% of the electorate turned out, that he couldn't even scrounge up 1/6th of the electorate that was willing to support the Kenyan.

(NO cops jumped out of any bushes during our conversation).

I've never believed there is such a thing as "bad turnout".

The people who don't bother to vote shouldn't vote.

If anything, because of abominations like mail-in ballots, motor voter, and election day registration, turnout is always higher than it should be.
