Armed Man Arrested Near Capitol Building

U.S. Capitol Police took an armed man into custody at about 1 p.m. today and closed some streets between the Capitol and Union Station while they investigate a vehicle they believe he was using, authorities said.

The man was spotted "in possession of what appeared to be a shotgun" and was arrested at 1st and D streets NE, said Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, a spokeswoman for the Capitol Police. They later identified a truck -- which is parked at Louisiana Avenue and D Street NW -- he was using and found "items of concern," she said. That area has been cordoned off, and as the investigation continues, she said, people in the nearby Teamsters office building are being evacuated.
