George Steinbrenner ill?
« on: May 30, 2009, 08:12:12 AM »
Now, remember, if this sounds retarded, I don't do television, I can't do radio, and so there's some things I don't catch on to as quickly as others do.  Nor do I read gossip columns or the National Enquirer.

I just learned that George Steinbrenner has Alzheimer's and dementia.

Whoa.

Is this old news, or is this new news?

Damn.

I hope it's just a malicious rumor.

If it's true, it's all very sad, to see the greatest figure in the history of baseball fade away like that.

I hope it's just a malicious rumor.

Okay, I got so concerned I actually googled.

I googled (news) George + Steinbrenner + dementia

and

George + Steinbrenner + Alzheimer's

and came up empty, nothing on google (news).

So it must be a malicious rumor.

Steinbrenner Terminally Ill?

Steinbrenner's friend and former Tampa Tribune sports editor Tom McEwen was granted a very, very rare invite to the home of George Steinbrenner, visiting his home in Tampa. "All signs point to total senility and/or Alzheimer's. Specifically the fact that Steinbrenner, for some reason, can't stop responding with "Great to see ya, Tommy" to virtually any question." Very, very odd. He seems to be much worse off than most people think.

Coach, it's true.  There've been more than a few people who hate Steinbrenner that are happy that he's suffering.  I don't mind the guy, because he got results for his fan base.  His two sons, Hank and Hal, have been running the team.  What's happening to George Steinbrenner is sad, and irreversible.  This is coming from a Mets' fan, and we have a reputation for not liking the Yankees.

See?  I told you I don't do gossip columns ("'celebrity' 'news'"), and so didn't know.

Oh man.

George Steinbrenner of course is no spring chicken, but this is very sad.

Rarely has the world been graced with the presence of one so overflowing with kindness and charity; a cornucopia of unending sweetness and light; a font of magnanimity and compassion; a bedrock of fortitude and tolerance; a brave stalwart friend and defender of the lonely and vulnerable.

The world loses more than just a mere man with his demise; the world loses much of its own charm and virtue and delight.

Damn.

Man, this is so very sad.

My brother (Ed Linn) wrote 2 books about Steinbrenner.
Steinbrenner's Yankees and The Great Rivalry. (Yankees and Red Sox.)
Ed is gone. He didn't care for Steinbrenner but he'd be sad at this news.

Old news.   I would never celebrate any player being injured (including those I despise) or anyone suffering from dementia or alzheimers.

That said, there are plenty of people who WORKED for him who would not exactly be saying novenas for his soul right about now.   You can leave the teams who hate the Yankees out of it (and there are plenty of them also).

I know most/many HATE the Yankees, and, by extension, Steinbrenner.  With that said, he has been a WONDERFUL citizen
of Tampa, doing many, many philanthropic things that go unnoticed.

I especially warmed up to Mr. Steinbrenner after I found out he was a fan of the buffoon caricature the sitcom "Seinfeld" made of him.  He is a classy guy.
