Title: Christmas
Post by: BEG on December 02, 2012, 05:00:17 PM
This is the official christmas thread for your decorations, home baked goods, mishaps, present ideas etc.

I will start off this thread with a mess I made today making a simple bow for the thing I'm putting on my front door. NEVER EVER buy glitter wire mesh ribbon EVER!

Probably not the most flattering shot.  :lmao:  The phone camera didn't pick up the glitter all over me very well.

This glitter shit is everywhere.

Here is that bastard bow that made such a mess. I can't mess with it anymore, even though it looks like crap. Every time I touch it glitter is all over me.

I used the same stuff last year.  It took months to get all the glitter out of the cracks of my floor.

Post by: BEG on December 04, 2012, 06:29:05 PM
Here is what I have been working on for the past two days. I didn't even put all the ornaments on. I think it may be too much crap, I have to give it a day or so and see if I need to take stuff off. I haven't put the star on the top, put the tree skirt around the tree or push it back where it belongs yet.

I'm thinking it looks a little gaudy.

I bought a bunch of cheap Hobby Lobby ornaments because I wanted to go more of the retro christmas look. This one (the long one) cost me $1.50. But then I went to Kohls tonight to get my daughter some black pants for her band Christmas concert tomorrow and they had a bunch of mercury glass ornaments and other stuff that went with it and I really liked it. But I'm not taking this stuff down and taking it back.

H5 for anyone who knows (without searching for it) the significance of the pickle and christmas.

I also put together three of these wreaths, then when I came home a few minutes ago I noticed we had another light (I seriously thought that we only had three) so I need another wreath. I don't know if I'm going to do it or not.

This one is on the left side of the garage.

This one is on the right. I need to push the red loopy thing down more.

Everything looks beautiful!!!!
ummm the pickle, let's see, a kid didn't have any cookies or milk to leave for Santa, but he had a jar of pickles, and that is what he left for Santa..
And as for the Johnny Jump ups, a normally early springtime annual, do they bloom all year long in TX??

Wrong!  :-)

They are pansies called wave pansies. They are smaller than normal pansies but here in Texas you plant pansies in the fall and they stay alive until spring.

These aren't as small as violas. I thought they were large violas at first until I planted them in the pot and noticed they were called wave pansies.

Well if you look at the picture of my christmas tree you can see the back door open. It was about 80 here today.  It does freeze here but it can freeze one day and be in the 70's the next day here in Texas.

I have 100+ of these Egyptian glass ornaments in assorted styles/colors that I use on my biggest tree.  Picked up a bunch of the mercury ones at Hobby Lobby for one of the smaller trees.  They'll really look great in the new house....next year.

Homey (that's me) don't set up no Christmas tree. If Mrs E wants to set up a tree, she ain't crippled.

Oh, and none of that Clark Griswold shit on the outside of my house, either.

OK, I'll play!  My sister in law is a FREAK about seasonal decorating.  She'll go out and clean everybody out at the clearance sales.  So at Thanksgiving, she asks if I could do anything with a bunch of 4' trees she got for a song.  She bought them, then realized she has skinny windowsills.  I do not.  So, I have a tree like this

in each window.  I went to Dollar stores and loaded up on cheap unbreakable ornaments, so the whole project cost very little, and it looks all stately and manor-esque.  Frikkin 1%er.  (Not really).   :-)

I have a collection of Hallmark ornaments going back to the '70's..more then I can fill one tree with so I just pick a box of ornaments each year and put that box up. I never know which ones I might find and it's like a treat each year to see ones I haven't seen in a couple of years :)

I put up a little over 1/4th of my Hallmark ornaments. I have a ton of cool ones, like the kiddie cars, old timey lunch boxes and more but I have a lot of ugly ones too. Back when I was really into buying them my mom and I would go after christmas and buy them 70% off so we weren't very choosy. I'm going to get rid of the crapy ones some day.

REally happy with them:-) The ex was nice enough to take them for us and I returned the favor to him since he really had no pics of him with the kids since we broke up a few years ago. He takes senior pics and weddings so he had the nice camera and all. What is the origin of the Christmas tree?

The Christmas tree today is a common custom to most of us. There are many interesting connections to ancient traditions such as Egyptian and Roman customs, early Christian practices, and Victorian nostalgia. However, most scholars point to Germany as being the origin of the Christmas tree.

One of the earliest stories relating back to Germany is about Saint Boniface. In 722, he encountered some pagans who were about to sacrifice a child at the base of a huge oak tree. He cut down the tree to prevent the sacrifice and a Fir tree grew up at the base of the oak. He then told everyone that this lovely evergreen, with its branches pointing to heaven, was a holy tree - the tree of the Christ child, and a symbol of His promise of eternal life.

Another story from Germany is about Queen Victoria. She often visited relatives in Germany and while she was there, she fell in love with Prince Albert. After they were married, they moved back to England to raise their family. Prince Albert decorated a tree and ever since that time, the English, because of their love for their Queen, copied her Christmas customs including the Christmas tree and ornaments. This story took place in the 19th century, around 1830.

Another story about the origin of the Christmas tree says that late in the Middle Ages, Germans and Scandinavians placed evergreen trees inside their homes or just outside their doors to show their hope that spring would soon come.

Another legend that has not been proved is that Martin Luther is responsible for the origin of the Christmas tree. This story says that one Christmas Eve, about the year 1500, he was walking through the snow-covered woods and was struck by the beauty of the snow glistened trees. Their branches, dusted with snow, shimmered in the moon light. When he got home, he set up a small fir tree and shared the story with his children. He decorated the Christmas tree with small candles, which he lighted in honor of Christ's birth.

Research into customs of various cultures shows that greenery was often brought into homes at the time of the winter solstice. It symbolized life in the midst of death in many cultures. The Romans were known to deck their homes with evergreens during of Kalends of January 15. Living trees were also brought into homes during the old Germany feast of Yule, which originally was a two month feast beginning in November. The Yule tree was planted in a tub and brought into the home. But there is no evidence that the Christmas tree is a direct descendent of the Yule tree. Evidence does point to the Paradise tree however. This story goes back to the 11th century religious plays. One of the most popular was the Paradise Play. The play depicted the story of the creation of Adam and Eve, their sin, and their banishment from Paradise. The only prop on the stage was the Paradise tree, a fir tree adorned with apples. The play would end with the promise of the coming Savior and His Incarnation. The people had grown so accustomed to the Paradise tree, that they began putting their own Paradise tree up in their homes on December 24.

Whatever legend you wish to pass on, remember that Christmas is the time to celebrate the birth of Jesus. The origin of the Christmas tree can't change that fact.

I just love my kitten, he's adorable and so sweet, but kittens are kittens, so we had to make a decree of No Glass Ornaments this year.  A lot of ours are my husband's late mother's, and they are beyond sentimental value to him.  They were very poor, and she had to scrimp and save for every decoration in her collection.  So, those are staying in storage this year.  I put up my tree, and without glass ornaments, it's not very striking.  SO you can have a pic of last year's, which I thought turned out nice.   :-)

Stairs etc still aren't done. He is putting the railing on right now and not having fun.

I did this today, a little late but better late than never.

We ave the letters S A N T A stocking holders but the stockings wouldn't hang right with that garland so I'm putting one of each letter on the stairs to hang down on that wall. I'm going to wait until he has the railing up.

My wife makes candy.

Here's a small Christmas tray.

That looks tasty.

What's the one that looks like a hat on the right?

Chocolate-covered mint Oreo.

I stole a recipe from a franchise restaurant that works pretty well.  Put some large marshmallow in a pan of milk and set them aside to soak (stir them so they don't dissolve).  While they're soaking, remove the filling from a batch of Oreo cookies, put the cookies into a blender, and mix until you have a fine crumble.  Toss the wet marshmallows in the cookie crumbs until they're covered and put them on a tray to set.

Good stuff, cheap and easy.

Mrs. Splash does something like that, but she just uses cream cheese. Mix 6 oz of cream cheese with a package of thouroughly food-processed Oreos. Ball 'em up, dip them in chocolate (half in milk chocolate, half in vanilla), sprinkle some Oreo crumbs, and you're done.

I must be the only person in the world that buys Oreos for the cookies and not the filling.

I somehow missed this thread! Everyone's trees/decorations look fantastic and I needed the pick me up.

We're doing the staycation thing this year and our son is visiting family so it's just us and I went low key this year. I bought a cheap 25 dollar skinny to to avoid taking out the big tree.

That's my regular tree!  But, I won't be home this year so I have a wooden tree on my table.  And, my VW wreath, of course.   :-)

The only thing I have is a pair of cattle horns on my freezer to hang some ornaments from.

Maybe the little wooden piggy on the front step will get a Santa hat, but I'll need one that's weatherproof.
