We are starting to think about our next pond. I have been searching Austin gardening sites and I found this video of a doctor's (Mark Akin) back yard pond. In that thread in the spa that asked the question if money were no object, where would you live, I responded TEXAS!

This is what my backyard would look like if money were no object. This is the ultimate backyard for me. I just watch the video and sigh...

My wife wants (me not so much) a pond. The biggest problem is we have Oak trees that spew GAZILLIONS of leaves every fall. The pond would get filled up in one day with leaves. Yes it's that bad.

Not if they are done correctly with the proper filtration and aren't over stock with fish. You can only have X inches of fish per gallon of water. Put too many fish in and it will overload the pond. Once you start being a "ponder" you will be hooked. It is a great hobby.

You can put a net over it when the leaves fall then take it off after they are all off the trees.  You could build a small one to start just to see if you like it.

That's what I did last year.  We have 2 acres covered with white and red oaks.  The net saved the pond.

Ours is very small with just a couple of Walmart fish, water plants and lots of frogs.  No filtration, just a solar fountain that moves the water around a few hours a day.  I keep it filled from rain barrels.

Yes!  It's work, but the reward is worth it.  I can sit on a bench at the edge and just zone out.

Try it WS. If you end up feeling like it is too much work, fill the hole in and move on to something else.  My bet is that you will love it and become a pond-aholic.

I love ponds!! When I ever get my tiny piece of America, I will get one, or two. My grandmother and my two great aunts all had ponds. There is something soothing about them. Some nice deck chairs, a nice cool drink(alcohol optional), watching the fish dart and wave between the lily pads is my kinda heaven!!! Maybe another pond for the ducks...
