Retaining consciousness of self beyond death ...

I guess this is more metaphysical than religious but what's your opinion regarding a level of consciousness or identity after the physical self is gone.  Not a Heaven or Hell or Happy Hunting Grounds just a different aspect of existence.
Thanks

My faith tells me that I and a lot of people are going to / are already in Heaven, and others are going to / are already in Hell, and that we / they will be / are completely aware of themselves and their condition.

I can think of few worse conditions than of being fully self-aware in a formless void after death.  Such would be my picture of Hell had I not been convincingly taught that it is a place of intense heat.
