TN to require mandatory gun training in school as early as pre-kindergarten (no opt out)

A bill to require public schools in Tennessee to teach children age-appropriate firearms safety concepts as early as pre-kindergarten is going to Gov. Bill Lee’s desk after a final Senate vote Thursday.

Members of the Tennessee Senate passed House Bill 2882 in a party-line vote of 24 to 3 on Thursday morning. It passed the House of Representatives in February.

If signed, school children would be taught “age-appropriate and grade-appropriate” concepts about guns beginning in the 2025-26 school year. Proponents of the safety concepts training have likened it to mandatory school fire drills.

“This curriculum would be developed to instruct children on how to properly stay away from a firearm if they happen to see a firearm, and what to do as far as reporting if they find a firearm,” said Sen. Paul Bailey, R-Sparta.

Republicans voted down an amendment Thursday that would have allowed parents to opt their children out of the instruction.

Safe storage of firearms.

Safety relating to firearms.

How to avoid injury if a student finds a firearm.

Never to touch a found firearm.

To immediately notify an adult of the location of a found firearm.

Teaching about sexual perversion and abortion is fine with them :thatsright: :loser:

enslaved1:
Just saw a story yesterday about a technical adult (18yo) who knew that mom kept a gun under the car seat, went and got it to look cool, then was playing with some younger kids and their Nerf guns, pulled out the real gun, with a nerf gun, pointed them both at a 13 year old, and "accidentally" pulled the trigger on the real gun, not the toy.  Thirteen year old died.

Hey DUmp flies, imagine if his school had taught him basic gun safety and respect for firearms.

FlaGator:
It's gun safety training, not gun training.

SVPete:
It takes a DUmmie to be outraged at, "teaching children age-appropriate firearms safety concepts as early as pre-kindergarten". Do they really want/need children accidentally shooting themselves or others?

It says something about DU-Denizens that it took 10 Replies before someone posted some degree of sense:

There are tens of millions of US households that both have young children and guns. Why haven't there been millions or 10s of millions of kids accidentally shooting themselves or family members or acquaintances? If young children really "have zero impulse control" and are too "overly emotional" to be taught, why are children taught "Stranger Danger" to prevent sexual abuse and kidnapping?
