Good piece.......and particularly interesting since my wife and I just completed a small tour of the south, and spent some time in Charleston.......in the comments section there is an interesting piece on the role of Jewish southerners in the slave trade in the antibellum south..........
I'm not totally convinced of the negative effects of the advance of Islam in medieval Europe, as they also became the keepers of most of the accumulated knowledge in the western world at that time, which was strictly hoarded by the Church of the period.......I would argue that although brutal, Islam contributed significantly to the "enlightenment", and forced Europe into a more modern era, at the expense of the opression of the Vatican, which also had to reform, or die. Fortunately it chose the former (though kicking and screaming all the way)

So Doc, how does or will history look back on us in the future.?
As we look back today to all that long ago we see that things have not changed that much in 3,000 years. Regardless of some society's moving on there is still a world out there that in one way or another still lives by the rules of the Camel train going from China to India.
All the knowledge and technology and in some parts of the world a slave driver is now using a computer to direct his traffic.
Islam is a relative new comer on the scene of history, a part Jewish and a bit Christian and set in stone by the rambling of a profit who was in his end time loosing his own faith that he had devised through the years. I am sure that profit would have been Buddy's with Joseph Smith had they lived in the same time. Excuse me perhaps I am thinking of Brigham Young get those profits confused.
About Southern Jews that owned slaves----what a shock, I guess they were the Jews that never read the Old Testament. Same as the Christians of that day never read the New Testament.
Today the number one money making deal is not drugs or booze, it is still the trade in lives. ACORN did a bang up operation on that and I see no reason that it is still going on under another name.
Japan, so advanced yet family's still sell their daughters.
Indonesia is interesting with all those islands and different traditions.
Lord I could go on and on, the fact remains that by the time we colonise Mars, there will still be somewhere on earth where there is a slave market.
