Right away, a H5 for the quite excellent title for this thread.
The true 1%, in the worst possible sense (obscene wealth, living in grotesque extravagance in which vast sums of money are pissed away on unnecessary crap like something you'd see in an old Richie Rich cartoon, completely out of touch with regular Americans, etc.), are the obscenely rich, uber- hypocritical, ultra- liberal Hollywood celebrities like Streep. I think that tradition started with John Lennon (He sang about imagining "No possessions," while he drove a Rolls Royce and lived in an Upper East Side penthouse), and is at a complete fever pitch now with celebrities bleating about how they "Care" about the plight of the needy while wearing outfits on the red carpet that cost enough money to provide an impoverished third world village with food, clean water, and medical supplies for at least a year, and jewelry that almost certainly contains African blood diamonds. But, hey, anything for Access Hollywood and TMZ to rave about how gorgeous they look!
Some political commentator coined the nickname "Glitterpigs" for them, and that moniker fits the likes of Streep like a glove.
As someone here noted in an article a day or two ago, Streep's own small- town neighbors expose her for the cruel, stuck- up, condescending, hypocritical witch (Perfectly cast in 'Into the Woods,' I guess you could say) that she is, when she doesn't have TV cameras on her.
Her speech was the most smug, self- righteous, hypocritical, condescending thing I've heard from a Hollywood celebrity since George Clooney's acceptance speech at the 2006 Oscars.
"They cannot grasp the idea that someone would put their love of country ahead of all other considerations, including the negative impact doing so could have on their career."
Conservatives do that all the time. Mel Gibson's Hollywood career was destroyed by how upfront he was about his conservatism (I recall him referring to his film 'The Passion of the Christ' as a "Career- killer" before it even premiered, but he made it anyway because it was a movie which needed to be made). The Hollywood careers of Bruce Willis and Kelsey Grammer were both very heavily damaged when they were each revealed to be Republicans. The only real exception to this rule is Robert Downey Jr., but I think that's because he tends to avoid mentioning his conservative beliefs unless he absolutely has to.
"They cannot comprehend why an artist of Streep’s stature would risk a box-office boycott in order to turn the spotlight away from her own achievements, and instead shine it on those who don’t have a world stage on which to speak, but nevertheless have voices that should be heard."
1. She doesn't have to risk a boycott. Most average Americans, of the sort that she was talking down to in her sickening speech, don't go to her movies (I can count the number of movies she's been in that I've seen on one hand), and even if they did, she's so grotesquely wealthy that it'll hardly make a dent in her pocket book and so beloved by liberal Hollywood that they'll keep putting her in crappy, pretentious movies.
2. Turn the spotlight away from her own achievements? She gave that speech in order to make herself look all compassionate and enlightened and awesome and make others fawn over her even more. It's what's known as fake humility, similar to Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift's Grammy acceptance speech on the supposed grounds of wanting to praise Beyonce Knowles.
"They have no concept of choosing to say what needs to be said, regardless of the consequences."
Yes they do, considering that if they honestly address any issues that need to be addressed, leftists like you DUmmies openly accuse them of racism, homophobia, sexism, etc., because that is the only card in your deck, and set out to destroy them by any means you deem necessary.
" They never say what needs saying, but only what their malleable constituents want to hear."
That's what I like to call "The Obama Method." Flowery language that easily- persuaded voters want to hear. "Hope 'n change," and all.
"Ms. Streep’s comments were based on concepts that are completely foreign to Republicans – concepts like patriotism, and concern for the direction in which the nation is headed."
Patriotism?
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Thanks for that, nothing like a good laugh to wake you up in the morning.
You liberals openly insult America as an evil, racist nation populated by brainless rednecks every chance you can get, and openly side with our nation's enemies (Especially Communists and Jihadists) every chance you can get. DUmmies like you write threads and posts in which having any kind of pride in our country, let alone actual patriotism, is dismissed as "Nationalism" or "Jingoism."
Hollywood uber- liberals like Streep regularly puke out pretentious movies and TV shows which openly insult America in pretty much the exact same ways, portray the US military and police forces as evil monsters who just love butchering non- whites for the fun of it, and portray Christians (Especially priests and ministers) as brainless, bigoted fiends, while at the same time portraying thieves, murderers, deviants, drug dealers, and terrorists as wonderful, sympathetic heroes taking a courageous stand for what's right.
"The real problem with Ms. Streep’s speech was that the minute she started speaking the truth, she was speaking a foreign language that Republicans simply don’t understand. "
Oh, we understand what she was saying just fine, better than you in fact, and that's why we're criticizing her.
