WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama hailed Wednesday's one-year-old economic stimulus law as an accomplishment that staved off another Great Depression and kept up to 2 million people on the job.

Still, with millions still out of work and losing patience, Obama acknowledged that to them, "It doesn't yet feel like much of a recovery."

Marking the anniversary of the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Obama aimed his message at people skeptical about the expensive relief measure and Republican lawmakers who voted against it and continue to hammer him about it.

To his Republican critics, who say the bill was a costly, debt-financed blunder that has not delivered on the promise of job creation, Obama challenged them to take up the case with people who have stayed employed or have found help solely because he and the Democratic-run Congress acted.

Obama even delighted in recounting a section of his State of the Union address last month in which he talked of the tax cuts from the stimulus plan and watched Republican lawmakers fail to applaud the idea.

"They were all kind of squirming in their seats ... It was interesting to watch," Obama said.

And Obama made sure to commend himself and his own team for taking action.

The United States has lost an astounding 8.4 million jobs since this recession began in December 2007.

Obama made repeated references to how well, in his view, his government has done with the stimulus.

 :whatever:

So he's STILL using that ridiculed and discredited "jobs created of saved line"?

This is shithead's offical site where they track this mess:

They've only spent half of it, but it doesn't occur to them to halt the program and reallocate the money to pay down the deficit.

It is deluded to think that gvt spending can restart an economy by "creating" jobs directly. FDR delayed the rebuilding of the USA's economy from what would have been 3 years of misery to 25 years of misery and agonizing slow growth.

The brst thing gvt could do is rewrite the laws that permit "enviornmental" organizations to file suit in "snail darter" type situations, and remove that ability. Then turn loose Industry with a reduction in Cap. Gains and dividend taxation. Reward now state of the art refineries wirh accellerated depreciation tables for real property AND chattle property. Face it 33 years depreciation on real property is silly. Things like that, and the economy would  have a renisance.

I know there is a certain amount of need for them but when the jobs "saved" are basically publically funded resource consumption jobs rather then sustainable production ones it is a ridiculous assertion.

At some point without productive private sector ones to support the public ones the whole thing implodes.
That is what states like mine are discovering but are still unwilling to fix.

80% of the 1.9 billion dollars of the stimulus money to fund wind energy went to foreign firms. Those funds were designed to create American jobs. How screwed up is that.

Even if he did create a job, then great, there is more you have to look at.  Also the question of how much was spent per job, which Fox news so regularly points at is as immaterial as the job Obama "created".

Here is why...

The key to any job always goes back to something called productive capacity.  So in short, if its a government job it holds zero productive capacity as it drains on the US Taxpayer.  If it is a private job then most likely its via a Union which is also a drain on the taxpayer and the would be competitors.  Even if Obama was lucky enough to create a real private sector job, which is few and far in between by comparison to government jobs, how long will it last?  Its being funded by the big blank check from Obamas desk which is still a drain on the taxpayer.

All of this still fails to answer the real question.... WHERE is the PRODUCTIVE capacity?  It does not exist and I am sorry some damn survey taker for the census does not qualify Mr Dumbama.

Amazing how every last one of the eggs in that basket will become full-grown fryers in practically no time, Mr. Obama.  You are sure one Hell of a farmer.
