Title: Bob's Red Mill
Post by: franksolich on November 29, 2012, 08:00:30 PM
Because winter's coming, which inevitably means I'll be cooped up in this house from time to time, I've decided to look into some sophisticated complicated intricate cooking to keep me amused.

This afternoon I bought a package of long grain brown rice, 27 ounces, for $3.99.

Anybody ever try out this Bob's RedMill stuff?

The rice isn't for anything fancy; usually I just cook it and dump real beef gravy on top of it, nothing more.

I have. Oats, split green peas, and barley. All good.

Oats, flour, whatever I can find at Big Lots.  All good.

I use Bob's products all time. I always thought it was high end organic stuff and then I found it at Big Lots too!

I've used some of his gluten-free mixes to bake things for my brother.  He doesn't like the bean-based mixes, but the others are good.

I use the ground flax seed in bread. I have a friend at work who swears by the various warm cereals like oats, barley, etc.

I remember some DUmmie was going to great expensive lengths to obtain the Bob's.  Was it the Las Vegas Leviathan?  At any rate, he poisoned against these products.

That DUmmie is an idiot, but I repeat myself. Bob's is not expensive; Big Lots and WalMart have it  :-)

As long as his face is not on the package, I'll buy it.

Yep they do. I can't remember how much the flax is but I'm pretty sure about 2.50 at big lots and I can use it for about 4 loaves of bread. Speaking of which I gotta make some bread again soon:)

Today, Friday, I went to the grocery store and picked up an 18-ounce (2 pounds, 2 ounces) package of Bob's Red Mill "high fiber" Oat Bran "hot cereal."

Cost, $3.29.

I might try it for supper tonight, because I always liked Malt-o-Meal and Cream of Wheat, and I wonder how this compares with that.

Sounds like it's serious business.

It is serious business.

I just supped on the oat bran cereal this evening.

It advertises itself as having a lot of fiber.

It's good; it tastes something halfway between Malt o'Meal or Cream of Wheat, and oatmeal.

I think I'll get more of it.

This afternoon, I acquired a 25-ounce (1 pound 9 ounces) bag of Red Mill Whole Grain 10-Grain Hot Cereal, to see how it'll fly.  It was $2.99.  It'd be hard to beat the oat bran cereal, but it might.

I also picked up a 26-ounce (1 pound 10 ounces) bag of Red Mill High Fiber Pancake & Waffle Whole Grain Mix.  It cost $4.29.  I usually don't do pancakes, but we'll see.

Okay, I've now tried both hot cereals.

Both are equally good, although the high-fiber Oat Bran hot cereal is a little smoother than the 10-Grain hot cereal, but they both do what they're supposed to.

I never thought I'd find anything better than Cream of Wheat or Malt-o-Meal, but apparently I did.
