 The first hour was fresh and provocative, but the second half was little more than a standard-fare SF actioner.

And where the hell was the Academy four years ago, when Children of Men was released?


Well, IMHO, District Nine was a pretty good movie. I had only seen the ads until I watched it on demand.

Did you know it was set in South Africa? Did you know it is a huge ass statement on Apartide? The concept was sort of typical but they took the story and ran with it.

Much better writing than in Avatar, and a much more believable story line.

BUT- what do I know. Let's ask the DUmpmonkiez:

With the first half very fresh and provocative, and the second half very well done despite in not being thought provoking, District 9 was definitely one of the better movies this year.

Anyway, four years ago the Academy was smoking crack out of a teenage camel's ass. Crash won that year.

22. Am I the only one to have found Brokeback Mountain overrated?
 I found the story slow and meandering, and honestly I really didn't find that all much chemistry between the two leads as I was hoping to find. Plus I couldn't understand what the hell Heath Ledger was saying half the time.

But hey, much like music, everything is so subjective.

Braveheart, yeah, good movie.  But, I liked Rob Roy better.

Best Picture: (because I don't know what they are...)

'Avatar' Eh...the 3D effects were cool and I loved the battle scenes, but it was a simple anti-war, anti-government, anti-big bid'ness movie...and no boobiez.

'The Blind Side' Blind football player? eh...no. Didn't see it. Wife liked it, which usually means I wouldn't...

'District 9' As mentioned before, Solid movie, good storyline, cool effects, anti-racism...

'An Education' uh...what?

'The Hurt Locker' Not sure how I feel about this one. I am having a hard time watching it. Still...it's 'my war' so we'll see how it goes.

'Inglourious Basterds' 1. It's about JOOOOOOOS!!! 2. They kill Hitler.  3. No boobiez. 4. there is no four...

'Precious' About some girl on Biggest Loser I think.

'A Serious Man' Not me.

'Up' I want to be this guy...except I'd have been boffin the neighbor lady...(she was only 68)

Inglourious Basterds is finally on On Demand.  I cannot wait to see it.  That would be the only one I will have seen this year.  I would like to see District 9.  Up in the Air too.

Saw "District 9" over the holidays.......thought it was pretty mediocre........good sci-fi, IMO, does not need an underlying political statement......and the "political statement" is what got it the nomination........otherwise, it was:

A rambling, quasi-post apocalyptic melodrama, with contrived effects, and only fair acting.......

Everyone's a critic, right?

It was okay for a dollar rental at the Redbox; I enjoyed it.  The shoot-em-up scenes reminded me of the last Rambo movie (even had the same tough-guy in it).

I cried during Titanic; the gun-chase scene was so beautiful.  :bawl:  It was needed too. All those stories of the lives lost, sacrifice and daring to let others live; how boring!   :thatsright:

As for District 9, I've tried to watch it twice and fallen asleep twice early on. That's not the movie's fault though, I just started it too late. It was interesting though, and I look forward to staying awake at least once.

"District 9" and "Inglourious Basterds" were both outstanding. Not sure either was as good as "Slumdog Millionaire" last year, though.

I've only seen bits too. Leo looks gay to me, especially in that fruity 3 Musketeers rip-off he did a few years back. Orlando Bloom, too. Except he at least has tattoos. Now the remake of the Poseidon Adventure...stupid movie but it did have Kurt Russell. The character was no Snake Plissken, but still.

One thing I've noticed is that if Kate Winslet's name is in the cast, the chance of spotting naked boobs somewhere in the movie is just about 100%.
