Title: 11-12 college football live thread
Post by: franksolich on November 12, 2011, 08:11:03 AM
I'll try to do better this week, than I did last week.  Blame "recovery" for the stunted thread last week.

Rice-Northwestern
Ohio State-Purdue
Michigan State-Iowa
Nebraska-Penn State
Wisconsin-Minnesota
Michigan-Illinois

Oklahoma State-Texas Tech
Texas-Missouri
Baylor-Kansas
Texas A & M-Kansas State

And today's big game:

West Virginia-Cincinnati

Most of the above start at 11:00 a.m. central time, 10:00 a.m. mountain time.

Well, the guy who punches in the numbers for the Oklahoma State-Texas Tech game must be stoned.

He just took it back; Oklahoma State 21, Texas Tech 0, second quarter.

How is it possible to screw up in a job like that, simply sitting in a cubicle watching a television game and punching in numbers as they happen--and the numbers don't happen that often.

I have no idea what sorts of activities after the game, but win or lose, Penn State fans are likely to be sore.

When we played there in 2003, it was disgraceful, the way those assholes were.

And they won that game.

I should point out Penn State's sorry-ass attitude about Nebraska's based upon two things: a guilty conscience and the national championship of 1994--not to mention their usual eastern establishment elitism.

In 1982, both Nebraska and Penn State were highly ranked (Nebraska number two, Penn State something like number six or eight) when they met.  Near the end of the game, a referee (from Penn State) made perhaps the grossest, most erroneous, call in the history of college football, saying a Penn State player was still in bounds when he caught the football, when he had at one foot about 2' out of bounds.

Everybody caught that; television cameras, reporters, fans, television viewers.

Everybody caught that.

Penn State won the game because of that out-of-bounds catch, and went on to win the national championship that year.

So there's that Freudian subconscious guilty conscience with Penn State; they know they cheated.

And then twelve years later--I was wandering around the socialist paradises of the workers and peasants at the time, far removed from any news--apparently Nebraska and Penn State were running neck-and-neck in the polls for number one.  Nebraska was willing to settle the matter by playing Penn State in a bowl game, but Penn State was too enamoured of the Rose Bowl.

Nebraska couldn't play in the Rose Bowl; Penn State, the then-Big 10 champion, could "buy" its way out of the Rose Bowl, if they wanted.

So both teams played two other teams in two different bowl games.

I dunno who Nebraska beat, or who Penn State beat, but they both won.

The national championship was given to Nebraska.

Oh my, how the Penn State fans bitched and whined and moaned, alleging "favoritism" in the voting.

Bullshit.

Nebraska has zero, zilch, influence in the polls, while Penn State has always been the darling of the television talking faces.

It's not our fault we ended up being number one, although Penn State fans think it was.

As I said, I don't know the whole story.  The bowl games were played, I assume, on January 1, 1995.  It was not until May 12, 1995, when I was way out in the empty steppes of southern Russia that I learned that (a) the Republicans had taken, for the first time in my life up to then, the House of Representatives the preceding November and (b) Nebraska had won the national championship in college football.

I still rank May 12, 1995, as the happiest day of my life, for those two reasons.

Believe it or not, franksolich actually did cart-wheels across the Russian steppes, causing the local workers and peasants to think he'd gone mad.

Well, I expect the Huskers to win. Also, I expect firewords, and Breaking News alerts. Sad, but I saw, and heard about the violent activity this past week on campus, so, I think it's a reasonable expectation. Wasn't into CFB as much in '03, so I don't know about what you speak there. I just feel an animosity building here, now, today.

I need to add regarding the piss-poor attitude of Penn State "fans"--after Penn State "won" the national championship in 1982 because of that erroneous call, the next autumn they faced Nebraska again, the first game of the whole college football season.

There used to be something called the "Kick-Off Classic," and Nebraska and Penn State played in the very first one, in 1983.

Penn State came into that game heavily favored.

We kicked their asses, and good.

I need to add Nebraska and Penn State haven't played each other enough times to decide who "owns" who; usually circa at least 25 games.

By that criteria, only Oklahoma and Minnesota (!) "own" Nebraska.

As of this moment, Penn State is 8-7 against Nebraska.

During the 1920s, Nebraska sought games with eastern teams--Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, Pittsburgh--because there still weren't many teams here on the Great Plains.  We played the Four Horsemen of Notre Dame two times.  We were the only team ever to beat the Four Horsemen.  Both times.

We played these other eastern teams a couple of times each, and said, "Hey, let's get something going here, like some annually-scheduled games."

But no.....the eastern teams preferred playing eastern colleges.  Probably because we hammered them.

Interestingly, the reason Nebraska always wanted to play eastern teams was because of transportation.

If one examines a railway map (roads weren't too good in the 1920s), one finds it was much easier to go east (or west), than to go south.  Very few rail lines ran north-to-south.

When the Nebraska-Oklahoma series started in 1912, it took four days for Oklahoma to get up here.

At the same time, eastern teams, even though further away, were just a day-and-a-half away via train.

Title: Re: 11-12 college football live thread
Post by: franksolich on November 12, 2011, 02:03:30 PM
Speaking of Missouri, they played us Thanksgiving week 1978, our last game of the regular season.

We'd played Oklahoma the week before, and upset them 17-14, in probably Nebraska's greatest game of the century, putting the so-called "Game of the Century" of 1971 in the shadows.

Up until then, we'd played Oklahoma as the last game of our season (usually though Oklahoma played its little brother Oklahoma State the week after), Thanksgiving week.

But during the mid-1970s, Colorado began whining about Big 8 schedules.  The real reason Colorado was whining was because they were always losing to just about everybody.  They bawled because in a typical Big 8 season, they had to play Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma three consecutive weekends, and thought it'd be fairer if there were some "easy" games for them in between.

Never mind that other cellar-dwellers such as Iowa State or Kansas State usually had to play the big three other consecutive weekends.

Well, Colorado got its way, which messed up the schedule.

Nebraska-Oklahoma was no longer on Thanksgiving week.

Nebraska-Oklahoma was no longer the season-ending game for Nebraska.

Missouri, our oldest rival, was okay, but Missouri was not Oklahoma.

So, in 1978, Nebraska had beaten Oklahoma, and was on top of the polls, headed towards another national championship.

Missouri in 1978 was having a lousy year, a crummy year.

Missouri pounded us.

It was so bad Missouri never beat us again for 24 years.

Ann Arbor......

doc

I know, I know, but it's just my perverse sense of humor, giving the wrong location.

It's a subtle jab at states that have more than one college football team.

Back when I was younger, I once introduced a guy from Mississippi, one of the first authentic southerners I'd met in my life (I was a teenager then), telling others he was a graduate of the University of Mississippi.

He actually got somewhat offended (but not irretrievably so), as he was a graduate of Mississippi State University, which he insisted was superior to the University of Mississippi.

You got Florida, you got Florida State.....you got North Carolina, you got North Carolina State.....you got Kansas, you got Kansas State.....you got Michigan, you got Michigan State.....you got Iowa, you got Iowa State.....you got Oklahoma, you got Oklahoma State.....geezuz, you even got South Dakota and South Dakota State, and North Dakota and North Dakota State, a couple of small states with barely enough resources to finance one major academic institution, much less two.

I dunno why other states just can't combine all together, for a single "University of ....."

It's just my sense of humor, mostly in real life, to deliberately confuse a "University of ....." and "..... State University," just to see what sort of reaction it elicits.  One after all is sometimes starved for diversion and amusement.

They've been at 35-13 since forever.

That is, unless the guy in the cubicle watching the game and punching in the numbers is asleep, and not updating.

Such a posh, easy job, and so no reason for anything less than perfection.

It was a good game.

Yeah, congratulations, you're headed to the Rose Bowl.

But why did Wisconsin seem to stall about halfway through the third quarter?

Well, unhappily, Oregon beat Stanford 53-30 last night.

I say "unhappily" because I was hoping the Rose Bowl would have in it two teams with a history, tradition, and who've played top-notch football for a very long time.  Oregon's simply a nouveau riche while Stanford's won its stripes through the years, decades, generations.

Up until I checked the standings in both divisions of the Big 10--I'm a little slow catching on; this is our first year there, after all--I'd thought Wisconsin had a clear path to the Big 10 championship game and the Rose Bowl, but apparently not.

The contest for top in both divisions of the Big 10 is muddled; it appears three teams in each of the six-team divisions has a shot at it, and Wisconsin needs to have some other things happen, to end up on top.

Even Nebraska stands a chance to win its division.....if Northwestern beats Michigan State.

But it's silly for Nebraska to cheer for Northwestern in that contest; better that one come out on top on one's own merits, rather than what other teams do.

As of right now, it looks as if Penn State and Michigan State are leaders in their divisions, readying for the Big 10 championship game to determine who goes to the Rose Bowl to play flash-in-the-pan Oregon.

I only worry about football games that affect my life in some way.

University of South Carolina beat Florida = wife happy = good for me.

Georgia stomped Auburn = wife unhappy = reduces USC's chances at something or other? = oh whoa is me and my good Sunday lunch is now in question... :-) .

USC only plays one very important game per year....that's Clemson...If USC wins that one, all is forgiven and wife will be happy for another year...GO CAROLINA ... BEAT CLEMSON...my happiness depends on it... :rotf:

Yeah, I wasn't too happy about that myself.

Excepting when Auburn plays Alabama, I'm always for Auburn, a team with years, decades, generations of playing major college football; a team with a history and tradition.

Nothing negative about Georgia, not at all; it's just that Auburn's my sentimental favorite.

I think it is a Wisconsin thing. Packers seem to do it too.
