House Democrats erupted in fury Wednesday, challenging leaders over indirectly sanctioning freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar for alleged anti-Semitic remarks amid an outcry over party inaction to President Trump’s divisive comments on race.
In a closed-door session, Democrats protested plans to vote this week on a resolution condemning religious hatred, a measure prompted by Omar’s comments last week suggesting supporters of Israel have “allegiance to a foreign country.”
The remarks have exploded into a larger debate over how Congress should respond to individual racial and religious grievances. It also touched off Democratic concerns that the splintering was overshadowing the newfound majority’s agenda, with Republicans seeking to capitalize politically on the divide.
Anti-Semitism runs rampant on the left.
Many of those speaking out Wednesday were members of the Congressional Black Caucus, who bristled at the notion that Omar (Minn.) would be targeted for a rebuke — even an indirect one, as Democratic leaders had planned — while lawmakers remain silent about Republican behavior, especially that of Trump.

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez weighed in on the Ilhan Omar controversy, saying it is “hurtful” that colleagues have reprimanded her fellow House freshman over alleged anti-Semitic remarks but have been less forthcoming about bigotry aimed at other groups.
House Democrats have taken to Twitter and advanced a resolution to condemn anti-Semitism — without naming Omar — after the Minnesota Democrat twice suggested that supporters for Israel are demanding “allegiance to a foreign country.”
Ocasio-Cortez, the New York Democrat who has become a party superstar, counseled a less confrontational approach in dealing with comments like Omar’s.

Ocasio-Cortez herself has on several occasions since joining Congress accused others of bigotry. In addition to repeatedly describing President Trump as a racist, she has complained that media coverage of her has been racist and sexist. Just last week she appeared to suggest that a Republican lawmaker, Mark Meadows of North Carolina, was engaging in racism when he pointed to a black Trump administration official as evidence that President Donald Trump is not racist.

SEPIC: Blowback came quickly from across the ideological spectrum. In a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said the dual loyalty trope insinuates that Jews are untrustworthy citizens and has been used to marginalize and persecute Jewish people for centuries. Omar's comments followed a tweet last month for which she apologized, saying that congressional support for Israel in the U.S. was, quote, "all about the Benjamins" - referring to $100 bills.
Omar has not responded to interview requests, but people who live in her district shared a variety of opinions. Patrick Scully (ph) of Minneapolis, a performance artist, says the freshman Democrat is being held to a higher standard than many in the GOP, including the president.
Sigh. Whataboutery at its worst. The left always whine about held to a higher standard than President Donald Trump.
