I have a question for those who post here
« on: March 28, 2009, 06:53:03 PM »
Hi all,

I just got an email from a friend where he forwarded an article from a professor who really did a good job comparing BO to Hitler and voicing his concern for the direction the country is headed.

My friend added he felt the professor was correct, and he felt that there was really little we could do about it.

I replied that I felt "the difficult is accomplished quickly, the impossible takes a bit longer".  I then went on to say that we citizens need to overwhelm our congress with letters of protest on all the dozens of stupid things that are going on from the bailouts to now they want to let the Gitmo detainees come into this country and give them money (our tax dollars) to help them get on their feet.  My point was that we need to make our legislators more afraid of us, the citizens, than they are the party whips.

HERE IS MY QUESTION.  Are most of you emailing your members of congress regularly......and particularly blistering some of them?  It seems to me to be one thing to bitch about what is going on, but something else to take the time to let our elected folks know exactly how we feel, particularly when we are really angry.

Just curious,

You know they only care about you when it is election and donation time right?

Your vote is your voice.   In this day of instant news, Americans have rather short memories.   The bailout however is not something the average voter is going to forget anytime soon.

I predict sweeping GOP wins in 2010, starting with my homestate of MA which will put a Republican back in the Governor's chair.

HAHAHAHAHA.  Yeah I have Kerry and Kennedy on my Christmas card list and speed dial.

It's the "people" that prompts their actions the most.... that's right, that's the ticket.

Funny you should ask as I just got a letter in the mail from my rep letting me know why he voted the way he did recently. (Thank goodness he's a conservative republican). He's also really good about responding to my letters.
I can see November 2 from my house!!!

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

5412,

You ask a good question.

I do indeed e-mail my elected representatives.  The problem with an email is that they can respond with an auto response.  This means that by and large our elected officials will never see the content of our e-mail messages.

So, in addition to e-mail I also send a regular mail, I also phone their offices.  It is always some staffer that answers the phone.

So does my elected representative actually get my message?  I'm willing to bet that 90% of the time they do not, especially if my message is negative toward that representative or that representative's posiiton on any given topic.

But I do keep trying for that other 10% of the time.

Hi,

Thanks for the response.  I got really frustrated when Senator Nelson here is FL said the calls to his office were 9-1 against the bailout package then he had the audicity to send out a letter extolling the virtures of the bill and why he voted for it.  I posted my response to him earlier in the month.

While I seriously doubt they see the emails, I have heard that they keep tallies of how many are pro and con on each issue.  In our case however, Senator Nelson does not recall this is a representative government and his job is to represent us in Washington, he is smarter than 90% of the folks who contacted him I guess.....

Anyboyd know if they still do keep the tallies on the issues???
