I picked this off of one of the survivalist-type websites that I go to a lot.
X1.8 Solar Flare: Early Indications Suggest a CME May be Heading Our Way

Sunspot AR2242 erupted Saturday 20th December at 00.27 UT producing an intense X1.8 flare. The picture above, taken by NASA shows debris shooting out from the site of the blast.
The position of AR2242 on the sun disc means that any CME produced is very likely going to be Earth-directed. Radio emissions from the shock waves do suggest a CME is on its way and if that’s the case the huge solar cloud will reach us in 2-3 days.

At a minimum, This will most likely disrupt radio communications. I will check the ARRL website. They track sun activity due to its affect on radio propagation.

My propane tanks are 85% full so my generator can run for 6 days +. (just in case) :-)
BTW: about 27 to 30 years ago, my CB radio made all reception sound like everyone was talking underwater for a few hours. I'm guessing a solar flare.

I am thinking about getting a generac generator connected to the gas main.
Any thoughts ?

My Generac can use either propane or natural but natural is not available in my area.
Also using natural gas reduces output from 8KW on propane to 7KW on natural gas.
If you use natural gas you theoretically have an unlimited supply so long as the producing authority and/or gas lines are not interrupted. Of course propane is only available as long as your tanks can be filled periodically.
I also have an automatic transfer switch that makes things quite convenient.
It took two guys 12 hours to install.

It was most likely a solar flare. Sometimes, it's just like someone flipped the off switch so far as radio propagation goes.

Once we get our roof done, I'm thinking a bank of solar cells on my roof. It'll keep some vital circuits going all the time.

When you say all the time, do you mean having a battery system connected ?

Yes. I talked about it with an electrician when we had the circuit breaker box replaced this past year. He told me that I'd probably have to put the batteries right by the on-grid breaker box.

What kind of generators do you guys recommend for using primitives as fuel during a SHTF scenario?
I figure they'll be plenty of their dead or dying primitive corpses lying about that it'll be an almost inexhaustible supply of fuel, until good and decent people can get things back under control again.

It's a tough call on whether to try burning them directly, which is smelly and messy, or dozing them into a pit and covering it for a methane farm, which is cleaner and burns in higher-end equipment, but requires a whole lot more time and labor.

You also create an EPA super fund site after decomposition.
