To a traditional conservative, the Chinese government had the right to forbid the sale of recreational drugs such as opium, and the British Empire was spreading vice.
To many libertarians, the British Empire was supporting the right of free trade, and putting limits on the behavior of an interventionist Chinese nanny state.
