There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

Wasn't impressed.  Poor acting, weak screenplay.

A watered down version of Divergent.
Even Divergent was no instant classic.

King of Jazz (1930)

It was one of a handful of films shot using the Technicolor 3 process, and the first to contain a technicolor cartoon.  It was the first film to have all of the sound pre-recorded, since the band director, Paul Whiteman insisted on retaining the clarity that could be obtained without the odd sound dynamics of a stage.

A very young Bing Crosby made his debut singing with the Rhythm Boys as well.  He was being transported to and from the stage by a police escort, because he was serving a 40-day sentence for drunk driving.

It's a nice historic piece for sure, although I don't think I'd call it a movie.  There is no plot, and it moves along like a vaudevillian show.  It's public domain, and difficult to find, but someone was kind enough to upload it to archive.org:

Le Chef  Pretty damn funny... I liked it.

Hot Fuzz  Another goofy Simon Pegg movie.  Lots of fun.

This Is 40  One of Paul Rudd's better movies.  The screenplay was good.

Elysium  Matt Damon in a dystopian future.  Good action movie.

Hobbit 3 - Smaug's the original badass. Too much focus on Thorin, although, yeah, he led the original Gang of Dwarves (and Bilbo) through the book.

Nothing in the book about the Elves being in Laketown when Smaug was acting like an ass, at least that I recall. Artistic license, I guess.

Orcs may look badass, but in battle they're pussies.

Alot of the extra shit in the movies came from the Appendix in LOTRs and in Tolkien's notes of the books collected and published by his son Christopher. Not everything in the books is in the movies though. Tom Bombadil was left out. Oh well.

Elves in Laketown are not found in the book- nor is the female elf with the hots for the dwarf. A little licence but it wasn't too bad.

Yeah, I am a huge Tolkien nut.

The biz about Tom Bombadil being left out was talked about with the first "The Hobbit" film. This one with the 5 Armies is No. #3.

Tom B. was a badass. But they left him on the cutting room floor.

I watched The Interview last night.  It is very funny, but kind of raunchy--in case you don't like that sort of thing.

It just started streaming on Netflix.  I give it the thumbs up.

Friday night I went to see American Sniper.  Highly recommended.

Lots of interesting quibble squabble covered over at Twitchy, especially this from the actor James Woods:

Went to see American Sniper...everyone in the audience applauded when it was over....

It was an appreciation of Chris Kyle's service and sacrifice to his country.

My husband an myself both had chill run over our skin during Chris Kyle's funeral. It really touched us both.

Agreed on all counts.

We had a smartass in the audience at first in running his mouth, but at the end of the flick, not a word could be heard.

One thing that I appreciated -- the film spent quite a bit of time on the relationship between Kyle and his wife and the turmoil they both went through. Battle scenes are there and these are gripping, but the theme of the movie isn't violence, mayhem, and making a political statement about Iraq/Bush. It's about people and their choices, and how they have to live with them.

In Kyle's case, he died by his decision to be selfless and helpful to his fellow vets to the point that he was betrayed by a nutcase who should not have been released from psychiatric care.

We had a smartass in the audience at first in running his mouth, but at the end of the flick, not a word could be heard.

A bunch of the wife's friends(all female) drove 45 miles to see the movie. They went to the early show and had to kill a couple of hours before they could get in. They were quite moved by the movie. They said that when it ended you could have heard a pin drop in the theater...then everyone got up and quietly left wiping tears from their eyes.

I'll go see it sometime in the next few days when it comes to town.
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

"America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within."  Stalin
