Sad, sad Schnitzel. He somehow got into something and ripped his side open near his right back leg. He followed me around everywhere, but I didn't recognize that anything was wrong. Then I reached down to pet him and my hand was full of blood. I then noticed blood on the floor, too.
He's just fine now, after surgery to repair the damage.

Maya isn't purebred, but close. We did DNA analysis on her and one of her grandparents wasn't Aussie (the rest of her blood line going back 3 generations is, however).

She's gorgeous, Eupher! Mattie had one blue eye when she was a puppy but it turned to brown as she grew up. Looks like Maya is a Tri-color Aussie. Mattie was a Blue Merle

She's definitely got the copper and the white and black, which actually lightens up in the summer. We have combed unbelievable amounts of hair out of that dog, and the black (largely gone now, in comparison to this photo) tends to disappear with the combing. She also has a bluish tinge, but I don't know if you can call that blue merle or not.
She's a very striking dog and she's incredibly affectionate. That dog ain't happy unless she's right next to someone and she usually follows me all over the house, camping out wherever I am.
Maya should be getting close to six years old now.

Mattie got into a little trouble when we were dogsitting my brother's female alpha German Shepherd, Thistle. She got a little too close to Thistle's dinner bowl . . . ONCE! Took one very loud growl and a couple of barks and Mattie wouldn't even walk near it again! I'm glad Thistle restrained herself -- she was probably 90 lbs (BIG female) and Mattie was never more than 45 lbs. :panic: Otherwise, they got along fine although Thistle kept swiping Mattie's toys and Mattie didn't have the nerve to go claim them again unless Thistle left the room; then that was the first thing she'd do! :lmao:

It's pretty much par for the course with Aussies, in my experience. We have a 4-year old "lethal white", and every time we groom him, we joke with him that we could "knit a whole new dog" from all the hair we comb out of his coat.
Maya sure is a purty girl. :wink:

Yes, she would pant when excited/happy! And whenever I came home, I couldn't speak for several minutes because as soon as I'd open my mouth, she'd howl, she was so happy. I had to let her calm down for a couple of minutes before I said anything to anybody :-). She was born on a horse farm nearby (half a mile) and they said none of the puppies' tails were bobbed.

My very much loved Logan.
Sable colored Shetland sheepdog. He is 1 year old in this picture.
His ears were actually floppy, but he was barking at the camera so
his ears would flip up when he would bark.
He passed November 30th 2011. (9 years old- cardiac arrest)

I can remember when Shadow (the German Shepherd I got in 1990) would do this as a puppy. She'd go out for a walk SO excited but then halfway around the block, she'd poop out (not literally!) and I'd have to carry her home. Luckily she was only a few weeks old -- there's no way I was going to carry a full grown GSD around the block! :-)

A guide dog’s life is one of service. And a boxer trained as a seeing-eye dog, belonging to an Atlanta man, committed the ultimate act of service, laying down his life for his family.
The dog named Simon helped lead legally blind Dave Furukawa for four years, but died after a car accident Monday where he helped helping protect his owner’s son, Will, according to WXIA-TV.
Furukawa told the local news station he was walking his son to school when a car ran through a stop sign. The 80-pound dog pushed the child out of the way, but was hit by the vehicle himself. Furukawa was hit as well.
“What people have said is that Simon either got up or jumped out, and pushed my son out of the path of the car,†said Furukawa.

Our law enforcement officers wear a target on their backs every time they put on the uniform (and many cases when they don't) and they get nothing but my respect, unless they actually do something wrong.
The officers rules of engagement puts them in even more harm, first they have to spank a person, then spray them, and if the suspect is still shooting at them they must then ask "pretty please put the gun down" and then, only then, can they use deadly force. :rofl:

When I was a kid, I had an Aussie puppy colored about like your 5-year old. She was a real hoot, and got me permanently hooked on the breed. Our current dog is a (now) 4-year old Aussie male and he plays just as hard as any puppy ever did, in spite of a good sized case of hip dysplasia (fortunately a little glucosamine goes a long way to keeping him from creaking along like some old timer).

I thought it was pretty funny how pets pick one person in the room and crowd around them. Trying to get up and move around involved trying to avoid stepping on one or all of your dogs.
The dog and cat do it here... if one is getting attention, the other one immediately shows up and demands the same.

Hate bone cancer with a passion, have lost 3 greyhounds to it. Did you get another greyhound? It tears me up whenever I see a greyhound limp, always have that cold pit in my stomach, thinking it's bone cancer. Have gone through it with too many of my friends who have lost their greyhounds to that evil disease, but when I was on a pet cancer support site, there were so many large breed dogs that suffered from it. It's usually most of the log legged breeds.

So sorry about our loss. 14 is a pretty good life span for a large breed, but we're never ready to let go of a beloved pet. You did the right thing. We had to make that decision shortly after SR's stroke a few years ago. Our Blue dawg (greyhound) couldn't walk and whined in pain. He had put up a good fight for 10+ years with epilepsy.
Goldens are such good dogs. I'm sure yours was a sweetie.

In 2011 we lost both Blue in April and Xena in November. That was a rough year. We got Bella in December. She's been a great companion for Darlene. They look so alike. Darlene is black and Bella is a "blue", but a charcoal grey.
It's good that you got another rescue dog. There seems to be a special bond with dogs that get their forever home. You did really well, if there is such a thing, to have her another 6 months. I went through such hell with my first greyhound that I lost to bone cancer that I swore never again to let it go so long. I got almost a year, but what a tortuous year. Those fentanyl patches weren't touching the pain. He'd howl at night, but my ex refused to let him go. Finally the vet and I intervened and said no more. It was horrible. As bad as it was losing two of our babies in the same year (I had Blue 10 years and SR had his Xena for about the same time), it's good that SR and I are on the same page with dealing with the pups. You did the sensible and loving thing, kept your dog until the pain was too great, then mercifully letting the pup go.

He turned his nose up at it when we fed him.
He held out all day long through all 3 meals while patrolling the kitchen during food prep.
Then, at the very end of the day, after we were in bed with the lights out, he would sneak over to his bowl then and eat...if he wasn't already full on people food.
That was his favorite trick.
So if I wanted him to eat when I put his food down, I played "can daddy have" with his bowl.
After a couple of threats to his bowl that he fended off, he would start eating, and I could leave him in peace.
That was my favorite trick.

What a smart dog. It's incredible how dogs can train us, vs the other way around. It sounds like he got his way with the food thing--getting what he wanted. That's such a cute story.
My Blue (my avatar pup) really gave me a tough time with food. They sound similar. But poor Blue had to take so many pills for over 10 years that it really got to be a challenge. He kept upping the ante. It got to the point that I'd have to roll the pills into peanut butter, then wrap the pb ball with lunch meat. He decided he didn't like the turkey that I got from Costco. Noooo, he wanted really high end beef wrapped around that ball. Ditto with cottage cheese. Instead of the generic Publix cottage cheese, I made the mistake, once, of getting a higher grade. The little bum then would only eat the good stuff. I fed the other stuff to Darlene (just a couple tablespoons mixed in their kibble).
Hope they both meet at that Rainbow Bridge and can swap stories about how they kept us going. :-)

She's adorable. Kudos to her for the weight loss. Our Bella and Darlene don't mind having their pics taken. In fact, they're hams. Will post a few pics later. But Darlene is terrified of fireworks. Bella thank God hasn't copied that little habit of Darlene, but in all other things she follows her leader, the head honcho. She won't even go outside without Darlene. I hope Darlene's health holds up. She will be 11 on St Patrick's Day. Bella is only 4 and would be lost without Darlene.

Took Belle to the vet today for vaccination boosters. She dresses out at 69 lbs. which is a loooong way from her peak weight at 99+ lbs. She's always hungry, but that's typical for a golden.

That Budweiser commercial has probably already been seen more times than it will be viewed during the Super Bowl. The total that I saw on youtube for for copies of the ad , add up to about 23 million views or so. I don't know if that counts views on videos that are embedded on sites.

She had a standard poodle. The friend had just boiled up a dozen eggs for some egg salad. Left the bowl with the unpeeled eggs on the counter and went to attend to something. When she came back, the bowl was on the floor, the eggs gone (save for a few shell remnants), and the dog with shell remnants around her mouth.
With that, she immediately packed up the dog, a blanket, a collar and leash, and went to the boarder with instructions to call her, "when it's all over."

Did you know that homeless animals outnumber homeless people 5 to 1? It’s not surprising to see an unwanted animal roaming the streets in even the smallest of towns. This is a heartbreaking reality we live with, but sometimes people find a way to help those dogs and cats in need.
A group in Canada, the Quebec Society for the Protection of Animals, found the dog you see below on the streets. He was so dirty and his fur was so matted, he could barely be recognized as an animal (let alone a dog).

Love that pic and love this thread. This reminds me of my greyhound, Jackson, who had a taste for birds. He wasn't popular with my son when he found Jackson had the son's umbrella cockatoo baby bird in his mouth. RIP, Jackson, he was one hellacious hound.

All three of our dogs are actually terrified of Phoebe. All the same, we supervise all of them when Phoebe's out of her cage. She has a taste for counter surfing and it doesn't matter what's there -- she'll either eat it or destroy it.

This is my 13 year old rescue enjoying some of what I suspect is some of her last good times! God I love her!
Love all these dog photos! Your baby girl may surprise you and live longer than you think...mine (about same size) was over 15 1/2 when she passed over to the Bridge. We knew how old she was since she'd been a puppy rescue.
Most of my furbabies are kinda a guess though since they're adult rescues. I know we all treasure all of our pets every day and they give us 100 times more than we could ever give them. :cheersmate:

The canine operative infiltrated my domain approximately one week ago. She used the clever ploy of appearing malnourished and hungry to play on the wife’s sympathy and gain entrance.
I interrogated her intensely as to her name and point of origin. She remained completely silent though out and only offered blank stares which leads me to believe she is indeed a professional agent.
As she remains silent as to her true name, the wife has issued her the codename Daisy.
You will notice a small mark on her forehead between and just above her eyes. This mark was placed there by a feline agent who infiltrated the domain during the winter. This feline agent is a split-personality operative who is sometimes franksolich and is sometimes Frank “The Punisher†Castle and was apparently displaying a form of kat-fu to the Daisy operative.

The second night that she was here she crushed the TV remote with her bare teeth in what I suspect was a warning to me. The wife gave her a stuffed bear which she immediately proceed to disembowel. On her fourth day here she attempted to eat the couch.
Saturday the wife decided that if she was going to be here for any amount of time she needed a bath. The wife filled the bathtub with water and called the operative into the bathroom. As soon as operative’s paws touched the water what can only be described as an action-adventure-comedy begin to take place.
The Rumble in Jungle had nothing on the Hubbub in the Bathtub.
Apparently the covert agency that dispatched the Daisy operative took the time to teach her several martial arts disciplines. The wife was attempting several MMA grappling techniques, but the operative’s martial arts training helped her to hold her own. There was water splashing every where. When it was done it looked like both had gotten a bath.
That brings us up to yesterday. I mentioned that the operative attempted to eat the couch. Yesterday she succeeded in eating part of it. At least a part of the cover and stuffing. She also apparently ate a portion of a plastic feed bowl. I say that she “apparently†ate it because where there once was a whole plastic bowl there is now only a shredded half of a bowl. No other pieces to be found.
Let’s do a quick summary…
She has possibly eaten part of a couch cover, part of couch stuffing, and part of a plastic bowl. With that in mind I told the wife to keep watch when the operative went outside to do her business because she may possibly shit a patio chair.
The Daisy operative also has some sort of weird obsession with a feline youth name Speed Bump who has dreams of being a professional race shoe driver. The Daisy operative likes to carry Speed Bump around in her mouth which is something the Speed Bump does not appear to be to fond of.

Chuck, wait til you get the multi thousand dollar vet bill to remove all of that junk from the pup's intestines. My son's boxer cost him about $3k for the surgery. They removed all kinds of toys, socks, etc. You sound like a patient person. I'm spoiled, my greys behave so well, no bills for anything ruined.

I don't know if I'm THAT patient. Thankfully, I've got her to stop eating the couch, but I do keep plastic bowls away from her. She's actually an intelligent and well-mannered dog when she's not excited, but when she gets excited she's like a hummingbird on speed.
My plans were to get rid of her, but it's hard to explain. When she's outside and you call her name, the look on her face is priceless. It's like she thinks the idea that someone is calling her is the greatest thing in the world.
Believe it or not, I honestly thought about you when she showed up at the house. She's definitely not a greyhound, but she almost looks like she's got some sort of greyhound or whippet (I think it is) in her.

Okay, I suppose. She no longer tries to eat things she ought not to be eating. She just makes some ungodly sounds though. Especially if she thinks she's being left alone.
As for the eyes, my wife just told me yesterday, "you've got to admit that even if she can be aggravating she gives looks that will melt your heart."
I forgot to add that she's eased up on Speed Bump, but it helps that Speed Bump has learned some stealth techniques.
