The smell went away, haven't smelled it since the last time I said I smelled it in this thread.  I don't think it could be a dead animal as the smell would be gone for days only to smell again, an hour later it would be gone again.  When we had the dead rat in our attic in Dallas the smell was constant, no break in the smell.  It was disgusting.
