No gun? Use a throwing stick
« on: June 26, 2014, 08:31:22 AM »
A really basic survival tip that makes some sense. There is a video at the link and in it the person providing the tip on the throwing stick makes a very good point. He says that in a survival situation gathering food is a lower priority because energy spent finding food could be used to remedy higher priority concerns such as dying from exposure.

A throwing stick is easy to make and to store on your person for ready use in case an opportunity to kill some game should present itself. The video and article also makes a point that the likely outcome of an animal being hit with the throwing stick is it being stunned and not killed so a follow up strike with the stick will probably be needed.

Why not just use a sling shot, easy to make and more accurate then throwing a stick or a rock at some potential food.

Old David had an interesting device, I have never seen one in action but I would think the male kids practiced with these things from the time they were 3 years old.

Most adult males were capable of bringing down the Giant with one well placed shot.    However none had the confidence in themselves or their LORD to give it a try.

Along comes this young kid, he was not going to fight the Giant hand to hand or get within 10 yards of his reach.     Plenty of ammunition, rocks of all sizes at his foot.

The Giant had its sword, not easy to come by, months were taken in its conception.   Fancy the number of craftsmen it had taken to develop the sword.    Balance had to be perfect for the Giant [ this was a special design for just one man--him]

Old David had no such thing, when the material wore out for the sling, the new stuff had to adjusted to, different size , weight and new methods of use.

Sling shots in one form or another, the bow and arrow for example changed the world.    The cross bow was just a sling shot with much more power.   These have to have some kind of projectile other then rocks so more work had to be put into the making of them and what ammunition they needed to work.             If it were not for gun power I fear the West would never been won.

Remember the 50's show of Denis the Menace, in his left rear pocket he carried a sling shot, why ? what do you suppose this 5-6 year old was needing it for.  Was he running about killing dogs, rabbits and the neighbors cat ?

In a survival situation you more likely have the means to make a throwing stick faster than wasting valuable time and energy scrounging up material to make a sling/sling shot.
