I just got back from watching Lone Survivor.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lone_Survivor_(film)

Two thumbs up.  They say that there are a few departures in historical accuracy from the actual events, but nothing that twists the truth in a malicious way.  From the authentic look of the picture--weapons, uniforms, equipment--they had cooperation from the military in making it.

I saw the film last night with Mrs. E.

I read the book not long after it came out, and I found the book positively spellbinding. Highly encourage anyone to read it.

The nonsense about Luttrell's being grabbed by the Taliban after having been wounded in the battle, and then being led over to the bloody treetrunk where they were going to cut off his head is just that -- pure Hollywood. He was indeed found by that Afghani villager and safeguarded for the 3-4 days it took for the word to get back to J-bad. And the bad guys were definitely looking for him, but through the villagers, Luttrell evaded them while he began recovery from his serious wounds.

And I noted in several spots in the film where, in gatherings of SEALS, Luttrell himself made cameo appearances.

Definitely worth seeing.

The wife and I went and saw Godzilla last night. I loved it. It followed the original movie (to a point) but wayyyyyyy modernized.
Great "check your brain at the door" movie.

'Gravity'.  What a snooze-fest.

'John Carter' was good, despite the Disneyfication of the original story.  'Saving Mr. Banks' was interesting.

Sounds like Gravity is a possible rental. John Carter they eff'd up so badly, I'd forgotten about it.

I just finished watching 'Oz The Great And Powerful'.  I give it a solid 'meh'.

Glynda the Good Witch is smoking hot.  Ditto for Mila Kunis, the Wicked Witch of the West.  I dug the Carmen Sandiego outfit in the first half of the movie.

Saw Guardians of the Galaxy last week.

Fun film, if pretty dumb.

They made several Footloose references, "Hey, we're just like Kevin Bacon!" Says Alien woman who never saw the film. BP

Afterwards, I went home, flipped on the TV while I went through some bills, and what did I see on? Footloose:o

Last night I watched two old John Wayne movies: The Dawn Rider (no dawn to be seen,  but plenty of riding; also plenty of fighting and shooting), and The Lucky Texan, featuring George "Gabby" Hayes in drag.

That was a double read for me, I thought you said you dug your Carmen Sandiego outfit OUT OF THE CLOSET in the first half of the movie :) ;)

I've never seen it.  But I occasionally like to watch an old black and white movie from the '40's.  I love the set decorations and the clothing they wore then.  Sometimes there is even a good story plot.

Never been a fan of today's guy type of "blood and guts" movies.  My favorites are comedies and mysteries.

I'm with you on the blood and guts thing- it's never interested me.  The same goes for special effects and other "wow" things that are used in lieu of a real plot.  Most of what I have are old comedies, musicals, and a bunch of Hitchcock films.

City Lights is in AFI's Top 100 list.  I don't remember what number it is, but it's on the list.
http://ffilms.org/city-lights-1931/

[edit]  It's #11 on their 100-year list.

I agree with the special effects stuff too.  I went with one of my kids to see "The Lord Of The Rings" and laughed all the way through, but no one else in the theater was laughing.

I guess the Cyclops and the octopus weren't in it for comedy relief.

I never much cared for sci-fi, unless it was being lampooned.

Did you grow up watching that type of stuff?
