flash drive problems

Someone help me here.  I bought a 16 GB flash drive to transfer some files that I need to be mobile.  The data that I wanted to transfer was a bit over 11 GB's.  I started transferring the 11 GB and when a little over 4 GB was loaded I received a message that the disk was full.

I went to the 16' properties and it showed that the 4 GB had been loaded with 11 GB's left, I deleted the 4 GB's and tried again, same thing.  I deleted again, went to the proprieties of the flash drive  and it said that about 250 MB was installed with the rest of the flash blank but nothing showed up as loaded.  

Can anyone tell me why I can't load 11 GB in data on a 16 GB flash.

Just a wild guess but ... have you looked to see if there are any hidden files?

Maybe a bad flash drive?

Here we go again..........

what operating system?? (98, ME, XP, Vista, Windows 7)

what file system does the OS use?? (FAT32 or NTFS)

Did you format the flash drive and if so, which file system is the flash drive formatted to??

No, I did not think of that, in my experience, which is not as much as I would like, when the drive is bad you get an error message, not a message that says the drive is full.

Plug the drive into a USB port... it should show up as a removable drive in My Computer.  If there's nothing on the drive, re-format it and start over.

NTFS

Did you format the flash drive and if so, which file system is the flash drive formatted to??

Thor, I am really in the dark here, all  I know is that the flash is FAT32 and the HD if NTFS

I don't mean to be a bother, but I found this site with the computer topic and thought I would take advantage of the experience of those that know more than me.

I've never had to format any flash drive I've ever used.  They have all been plug and play (so to speak).

I don't normally use them, but I had to format mine for NTFS when I got it.  I don't think there was a partition already on the drive.

Cut the guy some slack.  If he is just learning he may not know what information he needs to provide when he poses a question.

What does the OS have to do with a basic file copy anyway?  Perhaps there are a few things that I don't know as well.

Well, rich, that is what I thought, but as I said, I don't know as much as I would like.  And I am a firm believer that when I  don't know what I am talking about the best thing for me to do is keep my mouth shut and ask someone that does.  Or find some way to educate myself so that I do know what I am talking about.   :-) :-)

I asked him in another thread to please be specific when asking about stuff.

Ardent: format it to NTFS after you find it in "My Computer". While XP will see FAT32, it doesn't like it. If this is something that you're going to use on an XP machine (or better), NTFS is what you want to use.

I understand that Thor.  But since he is still learning, he may not know what to be specific about.

I cut folks some slack on these issues.  Let them ask.  Then if we need more info to help them, tell them the type of info needed.

How else will they learn?

I suspect that if you were a noob in my field of expertise, you wouldn't know what details I might need to help you with an issue either.

Ok, guys, I plugged in the flash, went to My Computer, right clicked the flash, clicked on format, and when "format removable disk" opened I clicked on File System.  Then only listing is FAT32.  I tried typing in NTFS and it would not let me.  That is the only way I know to format the drive.

You cannot do anything more than the XP OS will allow. At this point, you have nothing to lose. Re-format the flash drive. Right-click on the flash drive icon. Select FAT32. It should show some default drive size.

Additionally, *I* have had USB flash drive READERS that would NOT read a flash SD card correctly and could not re-format or successfully copy data to the SD card. Switched to a different SD card reader and BINGO!! The stars shined!

USB is still not perfect you know...just be advised...

I have NEVER been a fan of USB. When it works, it's nice, but when it doesn't, it's a PITA. I remember when USB first came out. about 60% of the time, it didn't work. It HAS coma a long way. I don't use thumb drives and have only experienced formatting one once. I was allowed either type of format.
