Thor Builds a Damned Good Computer
« on: December 27, 2009, 06:26:49 PM »
Mrs. E's machine was 6 years old and while still functional (albeit with an external hard drive that become necessary), it was getting pretty dicey due to excess heat.

So for Christmas, I decided to get Mrs. E a new computer.

But I didn't want to go to Dell or to Gateway or to HP or any of those places, mostly because I just didn't want all that crap they load on the thing. Additionally, I wanted Windows 7 on it without having to go through some sort of upgrade thing. (Keep in mind I started research on this before Win7 came out in October.)

So having a machine built was the way to go. And I knew that Thor could do such a thing, and after I asked him, he agreed.

The big concern I had/have is heat. The place for the tower is in a relatively confined space and heat buildup is a problem. So I wanted extra heat sinks and fans built in it. The rest of it wasn't such a big deal, other than 4 GB of RAM and an SD card reader. Oh, and more than a few USB ports.

Thor did the research and found the components and for the most part, I approved them. I ordered the stuff, paid for the components, and had them shipped to him. He put the machine together, did the troubleshooting, and except for a minor software issue associated with my home network and a boneheaded thing involving sound that was my doing, the machine worked perfectly right out of the box.

If you're looking to get a decent machine with good-quality parts and have it absent all that crap that Dell and HP load on the damned thing, give Thor a call. You might be pleased with the result.

LOL, you KNOW that's a matter of opinion and opinions are like buttholes.........

Actually, I installed Windows 7 on it at the request of the purchaser.

I wish I would have asked before buying my laptop. I didn't know MS Flight Simulator X would run like grass growing. And it was the $40 Gold edition, not the $20 Standard edition. Dang it. Dang it all to heck.
