Jeff Gordon retiring from NASCAR as full-time racer

NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon announced Thursday plans to retire as a full-time racer.

Hendrick Motorsports released a statement online, which states Gordon's 2015 season will be his 23rd and his final full-time Sprint Cup Series season .

Gordon announced his decision to his Hendrick Motorsports team and to his followers on Twitter Thursday morning.

â€œAs a race car driver, much of what I've done throughout my life has been based on following my instincts and trying to make good decisions,â€ Gordon said, per the statement. â€œI thought long and hard about my future this past year and during the offseason, and I've decided 2015 will be the last time I compete for a championship. I won't use the â€˜R-word' because I plan to stay extremely busy in the years ahead, and there's always the possibility I'll compete in selected events, although I currently have no plans to do that.

Gordon said he will continue to be involved in racing and with Hendrick Motorsports.

Note how he says 'full-time racing.' He does not say racing altogether.
